how to change cursor from a skinny stick to a block or wider stick?
when typing messages my old tired eyes cannot see the stick cursor much of the time.

Possibly an add-on might offer some good "caret"-related features but, if you want to try the built-in one first, here's how you adjust the width using a hidden preference:
(1) Select and copy the following text:
ui.caretWidth
(2) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button promising to be careful.
(3) In the search box above the list, type or paste caret and pause while the list is filtered
(4) Right-click in a blank part of the page and then choose New > Integer
(5) When the dialog pops up asking for the name of the preference, paste the one you copied in step 1, then click OK
(6) For the value, type 3 and click OK. Then go to an editing area in another tab and see whether you like that width. To adjust it, you can double-click this preference and edit the value (in whole numbers like 2 or 4). Since a fat caret blocks part of the following letter, you probably don't want to make it too wide.
