Developer Tools panel opens incessantly since installing ver. 21

more options

I installed the FF ver 21 upgrade this morning. Immediately, I am pestered by the Developer Tools panel incessantly opening up, blocking my view and interfering with whatever webpage I have open.

I didn't mess with any Developer Tool settings -- I wouldn't know what to do there anyway.

Judging by the frequent interval with which this interruption is occurring, I strongly suspect that it is linked to another systemwide problem I'm having under Vista, in which the cursor "jumps" at frequent, short intervals. I have not found any solution to the jumping cursor problem.

However, that problem was NOT previously causing the DT window in Firefox to keep opening up unasked.

This is a new problem and it is most definitely coincident with installing the ver. 21 upgrade.

Any suggestions to TURN OFF the DT function, or, anyone know about the weird jumping cursor in Vista?

That sounds very irritating.

In case some add-on or external process is directing keystrokes to Firefox that happen to be recognized as keyboard shortcuts for one of the tools, it would be helpful to identify which of the many developer tools is opening. If there's not enough labeling to recognize it, you could post a screen shot. This article has tips on that: How do I create a screenshot of my problem? Also, reduce the Firefox window size and use a non-confidential page.

When you say the cursor jumps, do you mean that the insertion point moves between fields in a form, or that the mouse pointer jumps around the screen?

General thoughts:

(1) Make sure extensions are up-to-date. For those hosted on the Mozilla add-ons site, you can use:

orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons > "gear" icon > Check for Updates

For those installed along with third party software or from other sites, you may need to research whether there are updates.

(2) You may want to run some supplemental security scans for possible spyware or malware. These three tools are highly regarded (and free):

Addons are up to date. Malware scans have been run,

The whole DT panel opens. See screenshot.

Cursor jumps forward or backward on whatever page I'm on, without regard to tabs or form fields.

This panel should only open if you press the assigned keyboard shortcut (Ctrl+Shift+K).

It is possible that some of the status keys have the wrong state and Firefox sees them as still pressed.

Try to press all the status keys (Shift, Ctrl, Alt) a few times to see if that helps to recover from this.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window or otherwise make changes.

When my panel opens it is docked below the page, while yours is opening in a new window. There is an icon on the end of the bar to switch that, which might reduce your annoyance a little because then you can move the divider and get that pane down to just the toolbar height. (In theory you can make it smaller, but then you'd lose access to the close button.)

Normally the vertical bar cursor isn't visible in a page, outside of form fields, but you can use the Caret Browsing feature to display one in the text. Pressing the F7 key turns this feature on and off. It might also have gotten turned on in the advanced options:

orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced > General mini-tab

In the "Accessibility" section, uncheck "Always use the cursor to navigate within pages"
