most text is garbled, some is black on black

I have a brand-new PC that I installed Firefox 5 on, fresh. worked great. then some updates / SMS packages were installed by IS, and now both Firefox 5 and Thunderbird 5 are unusable due to weird rendering.

hard to describe what happens:

  • all the text is in a semi-gothic format, hard to read (menu bars, tab titles, firefox menus especially)
  • lots of the time buttons, images, etc won't show up unless I page down and back up again.
  • lots of text doesn't show up, lots of areas of the screen are black, and what text does show up often looks selected all the time. I have a few screenshots if needed.

I deleted the font cache file, with no change. I've uninstalled and reinstalled both apps several times, with no change. Both the previous (non-5) versions of the apps work fine.

any help would be greatly appreciated. IS won't help me, and my only other easy option is to use IE and Outlook (which both render just fine). <shudder>
