Emoticons not showing in emails, both sent and received.

When composing/sending emails, if I enter the emoticon as text, it stays that way. It used to change to the graphic. Using the graphic emoticon function works ok.

On receiving, if sent as text, it stays that way. If sent as a graphic, the graphic is shown.

I've checked: Tools' > 'Options' > 'Display' > 'Formatting' tab Plain Text messages: 

   select: 'display emotions as graphics'
   click on OK

Problem still happens.
