Gifted a Galaxy Tab, set it up with my Gmail account. My Windows 7 Pro x64 with Thunderbird was working perfectly. I then made a huge mistake, due to my security concerns, and changed my Gmail with their 2step verification. Disaster !! No Thunderbird incoming/outgoing from my Gmail account. Reversed the process completely even allowing for 'non-secure' devices.

Thunderbird works perfectly in Yahoo and Hotmail; Gmail is the culprit.

Worked for my incoming Thunderbird emails but I'm unable to send any. I've rechecked my outgoing server settings 5 times and it is configured exactly as shown herein. My tablet can send/receive Gmail, Thunderbird only receives.

Solution choisie

Wonderful!! Just changed my smtp.gmail.com port to 465, and shut down. Opened Gmail in Firefox Opened Thunderbird Attempted to Email you...it went. Emailed two different email accounts of mine and they were sent. Both accounts received my emails - Hooray!!

Is the gmail account a POP or IMAP mail account?

After resetting everything back to 'less secure option' via webmail:

Did you try removing the currently saved smtp password for that account and resetting it?

'Tools' > 'Options' > 'Security' > 'Passwords' tab or 'Menu icon' > 'Options' > 'Options' > 'Security' > 'Passwords' tab

  • click on 'Saved Passwords'
  • click on 'Show Passwords'
  • select the gmail smtp account
  • click on 'Remove'.

then when you try to send it will ask for password. Select to remember the password. click on OK


The other option you could try is sending using the new Authentication method: OAuth2 See image below which shows what I use.

If the gmail account is POP, I believe you can use the OAuth2 for sending. If IMAP, then you can use OAuth2 for both sending and receiving.

Thank you for your prompt response. I followed all of the steps for my POP account and unfortunately NO JOY.

I also checked that I was "turned on for less secure apps".

Still am unable to send emails from Thunderbird. :-(

Make sure you have logged out of webmail. then log on again - just to make sure this is a fresh logon as you have made some changes in the webmail account.

Confirm you have deleted the stored gmail smtp password in Thunderbird. Make sure it has gone from the list.

close and then restart Thunderbird.

Try to send, you will get a prompt to enter password. enter password, select option to remember the password. click on OK

What happens? What error message do you get...word for word?

When did you make the changes back to 'less secure '? Post the following info: In Thunderbird Help > Troubleshooting Information Click on 'Copy text to clipboard' Right click in this question's 'Post a Reply' text box and select Paste. you can remove all info on fonts and printers, but nothing else.

Was an exercise in futility - NO JOY w/reinstalling Thunderbird. I am unable to send any emails using Thunderbird...

Lets try a clean reset of smtp, but you must do it in the order as stated below.

'Tools' > 'Options' > 'Security' > 'Passwords' tab or 'Menu icon' > 'Options' > 'Options' > 'Security' > 'Passwords' tab

  • click on 'Saved Passwords'
  • click on 'Show Passwords'
  • select any reference to smtp or OAuth2 account
  • click on 'Remove'.

So you only have the one mailbox entry.

  • click on 'Close'
  • click on OK

Then modify the Account Settings: Right click on mail account in Folder Pane and select : Settings click on 'Outgoing Server (SMTP) to see list of outgoing servers. select the name in the list and click on 'Edit' User Name = full gmail email address Change Authentication method to 'OAuth2' So it looks like the image. click on OK Click on Ok

Close and restart Thunderbird.

Create email to send. Suggest either a friend who does not mind getting a test email or send it to me . Email: mail @ anje dot co dot uk It will ask for password. then google will pop open and ask you to logon. You should get an email back from google.

I followed your script step by step. Changed my Outgoing info to my complete user name.

I now show only one account:

mailbox://pop.googlemail.com (mailbox://pop.googlemail.com) with my complete user name and appropriate password and todays' date & time of 11:01am.

I exited and then restarted Thunderbird and tried emailing a thank you to you but it failed. As did an email to a throwaway address.

The password dialogue box appeared as soon as I restarted Thunderbird which I entered and told it to use Password Manager to save same.

Never got an email from Google...

Again, thank you very much for your efforts!! You and they are appreciated.

did you also change Authentication to use OAuth2 ?

If yes, please look where passwords are stored. Is there an smtp for mail account? Are details correct? Is there an OAuth2 entry ?

Yes, user name equals my email address. Yes, changed setting in outgoing server to OAuth2.

Wonderful!! Just changed my smtp.gmail.com port to 465, and shut down. Opened Gmail in Firefox Opened Thunderbird Attempted to Email you...it went. Emailed two different email accounts of mine and they were sent. Both accounts received my emails - Hooray!!
