I upgraded to firefox 38.0.1. Now only the top half of tabs appear before main content. It appears that there is an extra 20px of vertical space above the tabs that was not previously there.

I have tried disabling addon tabmixplus and also changed View settings. Nothing fixes the problem.

I reviewed about:config but did not find anything that seemed to relate to tab positioning.

Suggestions? Is it time to migrate to Chrome for a stable browsing experience?

You can try to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox.

  • Tools > Options > Advanced > General > Browsing: "Use hardware acceleration when available"

You need to close and restart Firefox after toggling this setting.

I tried starting in safe mode. Tabs showed as full tabs in default size and were not cut off.

I turned off hardware acceleration and restarted, but the problem remained.

I had already tried turning off addon tabmixplus but the problem remained.

Is there a setting in about:config that might affect tab positioning?

At this point firefox is essentially unusable.

What happens if you open the Customize Firefox page and toggle the Title Bar button in the bottom left corner? If you need help to access the Customize page, see Customize Firefox controls, buttons and toolbars.

Are you using a custom theme that might possibly be broken?

Hi:

I toggled the title bar. The tabs problem did not change. Also, I am not using a custom theme.

Thanks, but still stuck...

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

I believe the problem is resolved.

First, let me note that I have Classic Theme Restorer and Tab Mix Plus addons installed. But they did not seem to be directly causing the problem.

I disabled all addons (I have quite a few). Then reenabled addons in batches. The problem is resolved.

I have no idea why this worked, but it did.
