Today my Firefox window had changed.

I only found out why because I heard from a friend that he had heard from a friend that there had been an update.

Before that happened, I was rebooting and anxious that my computer was playing up.

The menu structure has changed quite completely. I'm not a techy and it has taken me quite a while to find things.

What did I do wrong please? Why didn't I get any warning? The friend says he didn't either (he is techhy) and the other friend found out on the grapevine somewhere it seems.

Thank you for any information

If you feel strongly about the new changes I would suggest you to provide feedback on https://input.mozilla.org/feedback for the people who decided on the changes to actually see it.

Please keep in mind that Firefox is a work in progress and your feedback is very valuable for us to understand what can be done better!

Thank you . I will do that.

Can you help me with the answer to the arising question: on the old setup, it was easy to go to Recently Closed Tabs, find the tab I had recently closed that I wanted to re-open, and re-open it.

The only similar thing I could find on the new menus, re-opens ALL the tabs you have closed, I suppose in a time period, don't yet know what.

This rescued the tab I wanted, but also undid a lot of housekeeping work, which I then had to do again.

Is there anything similar on the new set-up please?

Meanwhile I will go to Feedback. (If I had been able to see Feedback quickly, that is where I would have gone, but there are so many links and paths and even sites, I did not even find the Forum from the Mozilla/Firefox page, I found it by Googling. And my previous Mozilla sign-up didn't work here.)

Thank you for your help.

Another option: you can add your point to https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/998106
That topic has been altered and marked in a way that maybe some Mozilla people themselves will read it. But no guarantee ....

Thank you. I've just sent a refined version of my problem to the URL kindly supplied by Aman Routh above. I guess the one you have given is different, but how is it different please? Please pardon me, Mozilla seems to be a massive complex, and it is hard to find the right links or understand what they are all doing! I rarely use the Mozilla help resources just for this reason. Oh for the days when programs had a Help menu and indexed information! Now you need wisdom just to find the wisdom ...

Thank you for your help.

The official Feedback channel is the "right" way of giving feedback on a Mozilla product. I suspect they a monitoring it but I am not sure.
The topic I gave you for this forum, is a topic started by me. I was aware that it is not a Support topic but I felt very strongly that there would be a place were at least people would get the feeling that they were heard.
It is not a topic to rant on FF29 but an attempt to make clear to Mozilla that the complete overhaul to FF29 has way more complications then Mozilla maybe has anticipated.
As I understood it, the moderators here (which are not connected to Mozilla but are volunteers) did make some "connections" to the topic. They explained it in the topic.
And yes, Mozilla got massive complex. That's the downside of growth. I have been using Firefox from version 1 (after Netscape). Back then it was a small community and it all was way more direct. But now Firefox has millions of users and it has become virtually impossible to have the communication it once had. And that is understandable.

OK now I understand and when I next have a break I will try and write a version for that.

This isn't the first time recently I have been misled by (another site, nothing to do with Mozilla, posting) a headline that (in their case!) not only didn't contain the necessary information but was downright misleading, with the result I missed their reply by about 3 weeks!

Thank you. I think the communication is there somewhere, from my point of view as a non-technical user, it's the indexing that is missing ....

Oh and to answer your other question on what you did wrong: you did not do anything wrong.
The update just comes without any warning.
Just 2 ways to become aware on the huge overhaul: you did read an article on the new layout somewhere on the web before you did the update or you are massively surprised by it. That is one of the points mentioned in that topic: the lack of information before this huge and changing update is implemented.

Thank you I am so glad it's not just me ! (I suspected it wasn't.)

I wonder WHY some online sites have got this habit of putting important information in pale blue at the bottom of their announcements. It seems to be a fashion now and it is not helpful.

I guess that is a separate matter from the one of putting a big "we are wonderful" headline at the top and the important information in small print elsewhere. That is meant to be good marketing, I understand, but confusing and thus upsetting the user/customer is never good news. I often think about the ways companies handle changes - "the company is doing it this way because they have good internal reasons that they know about and we don't" ... but then I often begin to wonder "Really? Or are they just using a stock idea without considering if it could cause further problems down the line, which is surely what they are trying to avoid!"

If you are massively surprised by changes please use feedback to make a suitable short comment.

Developers may get the message if enough of you make a simple short comment, but developers do not read this forum.

Hi Thanks. I've just realised this is on a different thread from the one I was looking at :-)

I've already been there. In fact, that is where I began, right at the start of all this! In the pages where you get two nice little faces and you can tell them something and that's it ... been done a few days ago!

Thanks for your help.

PS Note for me if I come here again ... the times on the thread are not the times where I am in the UK, so it's kind of not surprising if it looked as though a reply from hours ago had suddenly appeared here at about 19:15. Smoke and mirrors!

Use a British version of Firefox then you will get minor changes like customise from the NewButton menu being spelt correctly and the forum displaying times in BST for every post.

Or just for the forum times consider changing the prefs

  • general.useragent.locale
    en-GB
  • intl.accept_languages
    en-gb, en

Use about:config, type that into th location bar, hit Return, and accept any warning. Filter for the prefs by typing their name in. Right click and modify

Or install the British (also Gàidhlig or Cymraeg ) version. Take care NOT to use any option to delete personal information. You do not even need to uninstall your current version it will install over the top of it.

It is good practice to back up your profile occasionally and doing so before any new install may be worthwhile for belts and braces safety.
