How can I run/execute/use the sessionstore.js files to restore my session ?

Long story short, How can I make use of the sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak files I have found in the folder "Profiles" to restore my session ? I don't want anything else, just tell me how. I don't want to extract the urls, I want all the tabs I had (even if they are a month old). If I need to use another program, then at least write its name, if not then tell me how I can just with Firefox. Because it is a huge problem for me since I have a minimum of 10 tabs open that I make use of all of them and even the previous pages I have visited on each tab individually.

(I honestly do not believe I can fix anything even by asking here, but I thought it is worth a try)

Are you sure that you currently have a sessionstore.js file that has this session data?

In that case it should be sufficient to use "Show my windows and tabs from last time" as the startup setting and place this sessionstore.js file (or a renamed sessionstore.bak file) in the Firefox profile folder.

You can try to restore a previous version of the sessionstore.js file if you can locate one from a promising date and time.

Go to the Mozilla Add-ons Web Page (There’s a lot of good stuff here) and check these out;

Extension Defender :: Add-ons for Firefox

Send Tab URLs

Poke around, you may find other things you can use.

@cor-el Yes........ I have even created a backup (not a .bak file) straight in my desktop to not lose it or have it replaced. But I have it on the "Profiles" folder too. Also, I apparently Can Not restore previous versions in my laptop. On the properties, instead of "Previous Versions", it has something different that I can't translate but it changes ho the icon of the folder looks like.

@FredMcD Why are you even here ? Completely unrelated.

Hi MainGoldDeagon,

No-one has posted for a couple of days.
How are you getting on with the sessionstore files.

I am guessing that it transpired that you do not have suitable files to work on and have given up on the idea now.

I do not often use Windows. IIRC the previous versions feature only works on certain files/locations, but usually does include the the files within the Firefox profile.

Right now

  • Is the problem that you do not have a suitable sessionstore file ?
  • Or is the problem making use of that file ?

It just as you say and as I expected, nothing got done.

Also I thought I made it clear in my question (but apparently I didn't) that the problem making use of that file, since even if I have it in the folder it should be, nothing happens.

I was not sure what had happened. It should be possible to make use of the files that you do have.

Work at least initially using a new profile. Otherwise you just mess up the working profile. cor-el's post 2ndSept upthread tried to explain what to do. So in more detail

  1. Create a new Firefox profile (more notes below)
  2. Use a simple short name such as 2014-New01
  3. Start Firefox using that profile.
  4. Use the troubleshooting information page to find the new profile and confirm which one is in use.
  5. Close Firefox
  6. Copy the old session store file, that you have already saved somewhere and use it to replace the existing one in the new profile.
    • If it is a sessionstore.bat file rename it as sessionstore.js before overwriting.
  7. Reopen Firefox using the New Profile. The tabs should now be available to you. Use History or about:sessionrestore

Using multiple profiles is not something we shout about on this forum. It is I think considered too advanced. It does have some dangers in that you may accidentally delete profiles for instance. It is however possible to manually backup profiles, and that may be a good precaution to take. I would also strongly suggest that you follow this good practice (At least until you are proficient enough to manually recreate and modify profiles)

  1. Normally use the locations suggested by Firefox
    It is easier and safer
    • Always use an empty folder
Other contents disappear when the profile is removed
    • Never nest profiles within each other
As above, delete mother, lose child also
  2. Do not rename profiles
Confusing, profile names and folder names mismatch
  3. Do not delete profiles
Just remove shortcuts if not in use. Delete the wrong one and you lose settings, passwords & bookmarks etc

Uses of multiple profiles include

  • Testing, with clean or temporary profiles
  • Different users, or different work type within the same OS account. That may include different bookmarks files &/or a different set of addons.
  • Running multiple Firefox versions &/or multiple instances of Firefox simultaneously.

There are other methods of creating profiles but the best is probably to use Firefox's built-in profile manager.

Read up some of the articles, and if you want to try anything and are unsure post back.

Thank you for your replies and I am pretty sure it going go to work this way. Though because of my own principles, I am not going create a new profile. Besides, since I Rarely ever actually close firefox (I leave it open along with my laptop), the links I found through an external way, were from a few months ago that I already had no use of. Again, thank you for helping me and I am going to bookmark this so I may use it in the future.

You are free to do what you wish.
I am not sure what principles have to do with creating spare or additional Firefox profiles.

Please however be aware that the session restore could be slightly fragile. *You may find it worth considering occasionally manually backing up your sessionstore files by copying them on a regular basis.

  • It would also be worth book marking any important sites as a method of reliably being able to find them again.

Rather than relying on the History and the sessionrestore always to work perfectly.
