Firefox is not shutting down on command. When I try to get back up the dialog says it is still running and I must restart the Laptop

I shut down the browser and close my laptop without shutting down computer. When i come back and attempt to start a session, the dialog says Firefox is running, but not responding. I need to restart computer. Just started happening.
