I am rebuilding my computer after a drive failure.

Fire Fox no longer will same my log in information for site I frequent requiring me to enter name and password each time I open a site. Fire Fox does some time ask if I want the password saved and I click yes but it has no effect on future site openings.

If I look at Saved Passwords under tools/security/save passwords all of the sites in question are saved there but have no reaction when I attempt to open the site.

A second problem. Fire Fox no longer saves recent site opened atop the tool bar on the lower left that has Run, Document, Programs. It used to save the last 5 or 6 programs used. It now only has HP printer saved.

Chosen solution

Websites remembering you and automatically log you in is stored in a cookie.

  • Create an allow cookie exception (Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies: Exceptions) to keep such a cookie, especially for secure websites and if cookies expire when Firefox is closed.
  • In Private Browsing - Use Firefox without saving history mode all cookies are session cookies that expire if that session is ended, so websites won't remember you.

Clearing "Site Preferences" clears all exceptions for cookies, images, pop-up windows, software installation, and passwords.

We are part way there. Fire Fox seams to remember some sign in user name and some passwords. But there is no consistence in that all are listed in the Tools Privacy Show Cookies but not all will present the User Name and Password when I open a site.

I had always had the same settings in Privacy before and never had this problem until I reloaded FF after a rebuild.

There seams to be several small nuisance problems with FF4. How can I go back to the older version.

The lack of retaining recently used programs above the Run Search Program box is a real nuisance.

Make sure that you not run Firefox in permanent Private Browsing mode.

  • You enter Private Browsing mode if you select: Tools > Options > Privacy > History: Firefox will: "Never Remember History"
  • To see all History and Cookie settings, choose: Tools > Options > Privacy, choose the setting Firefox will: Use custom settings for history
  • Deselect: [ ] "Permanent Private Browsing mode"

In Private Browsing - Use Firefox without saving history mode Firefox won't fill names and passwords automatically and won't offer to store new passwords.

Private Browsing mode was not the problem. Not sure there was a single issue since in the completion of solving the problem no single cause was found. The last one I finally got to work was the fact that the site required me to have selected remember me within the site even though FF had the site saved.

At this point I thing all is well and thanks for the thoughts
