We have 2 users. One has no probs with Firefox. The other has no back button functionality despite taking steps in FAQ and a reinstall
The main user has no problems with Firefox only me! We are using a vista laptop and the latest version of Firfefox. When I ran an update scan it told me there was a problem and to download fresh version. While doing the first solution oin the site (through the toolbars mention under View to do a reset) there was a crash because the back button was not working So message said). Using safe mode to do a reset seemed to change nothing.

It sounds as though there might be a problem in your profile, either with a setting or with an add-on. Try a new blank Firefox profile.
First, make a backup of your existing profile folder for safekeeping. To back up Firefox, see Backing up your information.
