Hi justinhustles, where do you see search history appearing?

For example, when you use the search bar (short bar on the main toolbar), or a search box on the built-in home page, you may see a mixture of search suggestions and search history entries. The search history items have a little clock icon next to them to distinguish them from the suggestions.

If the way they appear is difficult to describe, a screenshot is always welcome. You can capture it using one of the Mac keyboard shortcuts (for example, Command+Shift+3 for the whole screen, Command+Shift+4 to draw a rectangle). Then use the Browse button below the reply text box to attach the image. Please don't include any sensitive information, since the uploads are public.

Hi Pkshadow, that's what History > Clear Recent History looks like on a Mac, alien as it may be to a Windows user.

This is on the mail search bar. It's like search results that I typed in over a year ago before using quantum. My browser is up to date btw and im on a mac

Do you mean the "autofill" text in the address bar, or something on the drop-down?

Usually if you have no history entries or bookmarks for a site, Firefox will stop suggesting it in the address bar. But sometimes it has an inexplicably long memory.

I can suggest a roundabout way to clear that:

(1) Go ahead and visit the site one time (2) On the History menu (or in the History sidebar, or using Show All History), find that entry for the site, right-click (or Ctrl+click) and choose Forget About This Site.

Be cautious with that choice, it removes all data about that site including history, bookmarks, logins, cache, cookies, site permissions, etc.

Okay that worked for one site. Another site is gone, as it was a build site for a client a while back. It no longer exists so I cant forget the site as it doesnt load up. How do I forget about every site in the search suggestions? I want to clear everything entirely

Let me be clear on what you want:

(1) Prevent Firefox from showing server names in the address bar itself as you type

(2) Prevent Firefox from showing history entries in the drop-down from the address bar

(3) Remove all browsing and download history data, including full URLs and server names, burn it all to the ground

For #1:

You can change a setting here:

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button promising to be careful or accepting the risk.

(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste URLB and pause while the list is filtered

(3) Double-click the browser.urlbar.autoFill preference to switch the value from true to false

For #2:

You can uncheck the History box on the Preferences page. See: Address bar autocomplete suggestions in Firefox -- click "Changing your address bar settings" in the table of contents.

For #3:

You can physically delete the Places database file (places.sqlite) in your currently active Firefox profile folder. More details if desired, but please make an extra backup of your bookmarks first, since those also are stored in the file. See: Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer.

You can open the history in the sidebar and sort by date and site. If you check out the month folders then you can use "Forget About This Site" for each domain you want to drop from history.
