On my windows 7 laptop, sync loads my cpu heavily for several minutes. It makes me wish I could disable automatic syncing and do it manually when I`m taking a break from the computer. Some in-progress indication will be helpful too. Another sync problem is a several minutes freezing of the bookmark manager whenever Im moving/deleting bookmarks.

Hi ramiwi, Thank you for your question. I understand that sync is freezing and that some of the bookmarks on your devices are being moved and causing the manager to freeze.

In order to further investigate the issue, and my apologies for the delay: Please disconnect the account and reconnect, wait for a few minutes and try to move the bookmarks again. Please let us know if this happens again?

Could you provide an error log from about:sync-log? Most likely something is going wrong that's causing Sync to do a lot of excessive work.

How many bookmarks do you have?

Thanks, but disconnect the account and reconnect didnt solve the problem.

To change to manual Sync:

about:config in the URL bar and hit Enter. Click to accept "I'll be careful."

services.sync.autoconnect - double-click to toggle to false

Restart Firefox.

Then use the Sync button to "Sync" when you want, and on cursor-hover the tooltip will show you the "status" of Sync.

@rnewman: I have 23215 bookmarks. Link to the sync log files: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/5553025/synclogs.zip

@the-edmeister: There is no such key - services.sync.autoconnect in my bout:config. (firefox 29)

ramiwi: your problem is that your first sync has never completed, so Sync is trying to upload 25,000 bookmarks every time it tries. The farthest it's made it is 12,000 before you quit.

See:

Generally I advise against trying to use Sync with that many bookmarks. You're statistically very, very likely to encounter problems, and you're right on the edge of the performance envelope, too. Try turning off bookmark sync.

ramiwi,

I have been using that preference for a number of years now in one of my Profiles for one of my Sync accounts. It still works in Firefox 30 Beta to effect a manual Sync at will, rather than have Sync run shortly after start up or when something is changed. It's been so long since I set up that Profile that I don't recall if I created that pref my self or if that pref existed by rote in an older version of Firefox.

If you don't have that pref, create it. Right-click any pref and select New > Boolean, than add that preference name, and then add the value of false.

@the-edmeister, I tried adding the autoconnect false key but it still updating on every added or modified bookmark.

@rnewman, Thanks for the detailed information. Actually I found some old post by you that make it work just like I wanted!

Here is what helped me from your post:

  1. Add Sync icon to the toolbar. Clicking that icon will trigger a sync.
  2. Set services.sync.syncThreshold to something large, say 6001. That'll require 20 big changes before a sync occurs.
  3. Increase activeInterval.
