Will removing/reinstalling Firefox eliminate security risks?
When I try to run my Avira scan, I get part way through, a blue screen (uh oh) flashes so quickly I can't read the text and the scan aborts. Additionally, when I try to access links (that are supposed to be secure) in various websites I get a message saying they are compromised and to exit immediately. I tried the same links on those websites using IE and they worked fine. Do I need to ditch FireFox and start over with it, or just not use it at all?

Maybe check for extra malware? Scan with all programs.
- Microsoft Safety Scanner
- MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware
- TDSSKiller - AntiRootkit Utility
- Hitman Pro
- ESET Online Scanner
Further information can be found in the Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware article.
Unfortunately, I cannot take a screenshot of the previous occurrence of the problem that occurred earlier (when I tried to open a secure link and it game me a message that I was in jeopardy and I should get out), because I accomplished what I needed to by using IE, which changed my status on the site, and now when I try to go the site, I have a different status which doesn't require me to access that secure link. So sorry. Thanks for your offer of help, and have a great weekend.
