cannot open a new tab using any of the suggested methods - just stopped working
-Selecting new tab from "file" or other methods does not work although selecting a link from an article opens a new tab. - using 3.5.24 on a laptop - this just happened - also when I open firefox -it opens with an ask screen and I do not know why

The Ask Toolbar is causing that in the Firefox 3.6.13+ versions. Uninstall that extension.
There are a couple of places to check for the Ask toolbar:
- Check the Windows Control panel for the Ask Toolbar - http://about.ask.com/apn/toolbar/docs/default/faq/en/ff/index.html#na4
- Also check your list of extensions, you may be able to uninstall it from there - https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Uninstalling+add-ons

Thank you. I used the second option and it worked perfectly when I disabled the Ask Toolbar. I have however removed the add on as well to make sure I do not inadvertently activate it. I very much appreciate your very prompt accurate assistance. Jim
