I just upgraded to firefox 4.0 and had forgotten about the tearaway tabs feature (because I had installed an extension that disables it in 3.X that didn't port into 4.0). I've seen a large number of people talk about having a way to turn it off since it was implemented, and I'm hoping that in 4.0 they've given us a way; but I can't seem to find it.

Please, please, please, how do I turn this off? I use a Wacom tablet and very frequently I end up tearing away tabs when I intend to select them, and it is incredibly annoying.

I am not sure there is such a hidden preference, otherwise there would not be an add-on. Maybe the add-on will be updated to work with firefox 4.

The extension bug489729 (Disable detach and tear off tab

has not yet been made compatible with Firefox 4. The developer White Alice775 is working on that, but warns that any new update will not be compatible with "Tab Mix Plus and any other Tab related extension." See:

Some users consider the tear-off tab a feature; I know I do. To restore the tab to the original window, simply drag it back into position in the original window.

Yeah, that's the extension I had installed. I honestly am surprised that they didn't give us a way to disable this as I've seen more complaints about it than people who like it. I don't disagree that it should be a feature, it just should have a way to be disabled.

Unfortunately, you mostly see posts from those who don't like tear off tabs. Posts about that have declined drastically since it first appeared as a possible "bug". As I said, most users now consider it a feature. Just be careful about moving your mouse when you are on a tab with the left-click mouse button pressed.

If there were on-screen prefernces for everything, it would be too cumbersome for users. Any new hidden preferences would just make the prefs file grow as well as the under-lying code to support those.

Keep watching that Mozillazine link that I posted. Alice is very active in the threads for her extensions on Mozillazine and she will post in that thread when an update to bug489729 (Disable detach and tear off tab is available for Firefox 4.

Well, Chrome and Safari both have tearaway tabs and they aren't nearly as annoying as FireFox's. To that end, I'm going to move over to Chrome and see if it serves my needs better. Looking at the browser usage graphs it looks like Chrome is stealing FireFox's stealing of IE's market share, so that indicates to me that it may provide a better browsing experience overall.

I am posting this because I want the developers to be aware that this "feature" may be driving away more users than ones like me who will let them know what's happening. I've been a FireFox user almost since it started, and love FireFox, but this one "feature" is making it impossible for me to use.

Thanks for the comments, everyone. I'll see you on the other side.

This site is for asking support questions not requesting new features.

I doubt many developers will see anything posted on this firefox support section, you would be better using one of the feedback methods, or one of the other forums. The other point is that the tear-off tabs feature has not really changed with the release of firefox 4, the change is with the add-on compatibility, and the add-on designer appears to be attempting to deal with that.

If the tear off tabs is specifically a problem with tablet pc's maybe it would be worth trying to ask for changes to be made, but that will not happen because of postings here.
