On some web pages ( not all) I can not open PDF in Firefox but I can in I.E.

I have set my preferences to use Adobe to open PDF and also installed PDF viewer add on. But on some websites like USPS.com I am unable to open a shipping label in Firefox. I can if I browse with I.E. I always get this weird looking hard drive looking picture in the download box. Please see the attached.

It looks as through there is a problem with the file name, either a missing extension or an inappropriate extension.

Could you try this:

(1) Turn on display of ALL file extensions in Windows: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/show-hide-file-name-extensions

(2) Turn on Firefox's feature to let you choose the save destination, since this also allows you to see and correct problems with file names/extension: Startup, home page, tabs, and download settings

I realize this is just working around some incompatibility between Firefox and the site, but since I don't use that service myself, I don't have a better suggestion at this point.

I tried your suggestions but it did not work.

Perhaps I should have mentioned that this would only help with future downloads. For previous downloads, you need to click the disk icon* at the right end and manually rename the file with a .pdf extension.

As for why Firefox doesn't recognize these as PDFs in the first place, that usually is caused by the server sending a non-specific content type indication. Firefox only knows it's a PDF when the server sends application/pdf as the content type.

* Sorry, it's not an icon of a disk, it's an icon of a folder. The hover text is "Open Containing Folder" and that will take you to the file where you can right-click it and choose Rename.
