Since updating to FF 25, "When I open a link in a new tab, switch to it immediately." does not work. Where's the fix?

Checking the box makes no difference; I always have to click on the tab. I have systematically disabled all add-ons to see if they are contributing to the problem but nothing seems to help. I couldn't find a specific item in about:config that looked like a solution and preferred not to experiment.

Any ideas?

I think it's worth a visit to about:config. Your More system details shows:

  • browser.tabs.loadInBackground: False
  • browser.tabs.loadDivertedInBackground: True

The checkbox on Options > Tabs is only for the first one.

The second one relates to links that automatically launch a new window and which Firefox "diverts" to a new tab. If you are getting new tabs automatically — without having to hold Ctrl or middle-click or right-click and choose Open in New Tab — make that second one false and that should fix it.

By the way, your More system details also shows a user.js file in your Firefox profile folder (your personal settings folder). If you do not recall creating this file, it may have been created by an extension or by external software. At startup, the preferences in the user.js file will override any preferences you set and saved during your previous session. Check out this article for how to resolve that issue: How to fix preferences that won't save.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window.

Finally got back to this issue... 'tis the season, doncha know?...

jscher2000's first fix worked. I wanted to let you know but for some reason the email ended with "If this answer solves your problem, please" and was cut off after that. Same with cor-el's email. Weird.

Thanks for the fix.
