I'd like to change the layout for firefox 4. Specifiacally I want the tabs to appears above the page not between the menu bar and the nagigation toolbar. I'd also like to move the home button on to the left hand side. Thanks, if anyone can help.

This is really just about usability and the way I read the screen, I don't really want to train my brain to read it differently and I like the convenience of being able to switch and close tabs.

Right click a blank part of the tab bar and then click Customize. A panel will open and while it remains on screen, you can rearrange the layout to your liking.

You can also remove stuff you don't want by dragging it into that panel. Similarly, you can add to the layout by dragging whatever you want out of there.

Thanks, that's really helpful. I thought it would be something along those lines and I'd been struggling to get things moving across the screen. If anyone else is trying to move the tabs when you click the customise button and then click on the tabs, there is a button to say "tabs on top" which you can uncheck to put them above the page.

If you want Firefox 4.0 to look like version 3.6.x, click "Menu bar" in the same menu. Personally, I prefer the old style even though it takes up extra space.

The screenshot shows the old style at the top (which I have) and the new one in the bottom half of the picture.

I tried right clicking the tabs bar (empty space) and then customize, but I get the same customize screen as for the other toolbars (see image). That one only lets me drag new buttons to the toolbars. I can live with the other changes (even though I don't like them at all), but the tabs in the wrong place is really disturbing. Is there another way to change the layout? I'm on XP, if that makes a difference.

@ morba, to move the tabs to below the location bar as shown in the top half of the screenshot I posted, right click a blank part of the Tab Bar and then click the option called "Tabs on top" to remove the checkmark.

The panel which opens when you click Customize is there to allow you to drag buttons, toolbars etc., which you don't want into that panel, or drag stuff out of there. But while it remains visible, you can also re-arrange the layout by dragging anything around. For example, you can move the Home button from it's default location on the right hand side of the Search Bar and place it next to the Back/Forward buttons if you want to. You don't have to drag it into that panel first.
