I have Thunderbird email. When I delete an email, any email...... most all emails, they keep reappearing in the inbox within 1 second. I can delete the same email 6-10 times before it will go away! I have even tried to drag it into the trash, and it reappears. I've mentioned it in a thread, but no comments related to it. Someone mentioned a "specific series of emails" that he deleted with this problem, but for me it's about every email!! Very frustrating!

And in that topic you said it took 2 seconds. and you did not even bother to answer what was obviously a relevant question there and here. Who is your mail provider?

Other relevant information that would assist anyone trying to help you would be if the account is IMAP or POP and how frequently you are checking email in the account settings.

Could be various reasons - mail stuck like a log jam - popstate.dat file corrupted - index gone awol - Inbox or Trash folder corrupt - etc etc

As this is a POP account, please tell us a bit about your setup.

'Account Settings' > 'Server Settings' for pop account.

  • Is this selected: 'check for new messages on server at startup'
  • Is this selected: 'Check for new mesages every X minutes'  ? and How many X minutes ?
  • Is this selected: 'Automatically download new messages' ?
  • Is this selected: 'Fetch headers only' ?
  • Is this selected: 'Leave message on server' ?
  • Is this selected: 'Until I delete them' ?

Please logon to your webmail account using a browser. Clean up the server side - this often clears any log jam.

  • Delete any emails you do not want.
  • Empty the server Spam/Junk folder.
  • Empty the server Trash

Back In Thunderbird: In case this is a corrupted Inbox - we'll deal with it first, you need to clear it of all good wanted emails as you do not want to lose them. Please create suitable folders for storage eg: Family, Friends, Business, Online Orders, Clubs etc etc Move all the good wanted email from 'Inbox' into the relevant folder.

When all the good wanted emails are removed from the Inbox and saved in other folders:

  • Right click on Inbox and select 'Compact'

Let it complete the compacting process.

Now try deleting any remaining unwanted emails from Inbox. Do they go to TRash ? What happens ? Report back on results.
