How can I disable the various callbacks to tiles.cdn.mozilla.net without enabling the "do not track" feature? I have tried setting "browser.newtabpage.enabled" and "browser.newtabpage.enhanced" to false to no avail.

How often does Firefox check?

I noticed a couple URLs in about:config that you could try removing. Maybe that will resolve the issue without causing any serious harm?

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button promising to be careful.

(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste newtab and pause while the list is filtered

(3) Double-click the browser.newtabpage.directory.ping preference and clear the address and OK the change.

(4) Double-click the browser.newtabpage.directory.source preference and clear the address and OK the change.

Any noticeable change? If you need to restore the default setting for any reason, simply right-click > Reset on each preference.

It may seem removing the ping and source preferences did the trick. Thank you.

You can delete the directoryLinks.json file in the parent location of the disk cache to remove the currently stored directory links. See the about:cache page for the location of the disk cache and go one level up.
