I have removed mailcheck/mail.com from add-ons and extensions folder and programs/features but when I open a new tab the mailcheck icon is still displayed next to the search bar. Any idea how to remove it?

In your More System Details Extensions = mail.com MailCheck 3.0.2 (toolbar@mail.com)

Try disabling that extension and see if that icon goes away.
