Every time I load Firefox Bing is the default search engine in the Web Search bar. I can remove it from the list and put Google at the top but when I reopen Firefox Bing is back on top. I have tried to about:config tactics that others have used but I believe that only affect the address bar, not the Web Search bar because it hasn't worked for me. I have uninstalled Firefox and reinstalled it to no avail. All of this started after I installed Windows Live Photo Gallery. The investigation I have done so far suggests it is a registry hack. Thanks in advance for any help. I have attached a screenshot of the exact problem so there is no confusion as to what search bar I am talking about: http://i.imgur.com/K0Mqs.png

First, do you have a Bing Toolbar or related extension? As long as that is installed, it may be impossible to override it.

You can check your add-ons here:

orange Firefox buttton or classic Tools menu > Add-ons

In particular, check the Extensions category.

In some cases, Firefox's data file that stores toolbar settings, last window size, and other similar things, can become corrupted and needs to be reset or rebuilt. Although that might not be necessary in your case, for possible future reference, here's the link: Changes to toolbars and window sizes are not saved.

I think it's always a good idea to back up before using Safe Mode, in case you accidentally wipe out your bookmarks or something. See Back up and restore information in Firefox profiles. (You can copy your entire Firefox profile folder somewhere outside of the Mozilla folder.)

Thank you for your response.

I haven't purposely downloaded any toolbars or extensions. The only thing I downloaded recently was Windows Live Photo Gallery. The extensions category doesn't yield any new information either. I will try your link to the Toolbar resetting problem and see where that goes.
