Firefox will not play content that I believe requires Java, but it shows enabled in all firefox settings. Problem site is mainly foxnews.com content.

You apparently only need javascript enabled in your browser, if you see the formatting icons in these messages you have that enabled. The video is FlashPlayer based. Try clearing your cache and maybe cookies. Check nothing such as adblockers or security software is blocking the site.

You appear to have FlashPlayer installed. You may have java console installed, that is unlikely to be needed for this, and may also be out of date.

Thanks for the reply. I checked the options and javascript is enabled. Also I cleared the cache and installed the latest flash player. Still no luck in getting firefox to play the video streams at foxnews.com Also the site works fine in Internet Explorer.

First check the basics does flash player work ok in your Firefox browser go to the following webpage to check, using firefox:

Do you see the formatting icons above where you type the messages in this forum ? [B], [i] etc

Clear your cache and cookies before trying the site again

Some broadcasters only allow viewing from certain countries, but I could view the the video you linked to. Another posibility is some sites do not allow you to watch videos if the adverts are blocked. See also

Again, thanks for your reply. Flash is working fine everywhere but the foxnews site. Version 10,3,183,10 is installed. Link for flash check works fine in IE. IE dislays teh same version of flash. I do see the formatting icons. Cache has been cleared. I will not clear cookies as I have cookies set for financial sites that are a real pain to re-establish. Advertisements are not blocked. It will be just easier to give up on Firefox and use Internet Explorer. I don't need to be jumping through hoops to make a program work correctly.

OK you know what you like using, and of course there is the option of using IE & Firefox, watching Flash video only on IE.

The problem seems likely to be something specific to your on computer's setup. If you try

  • In safe mode
    • but make no changes when you see the Window with a list of options - just click on continue
    • with default theme only
    • and with all plugins other that FlashPlayer disabled

There is then a good possibility it would work. If you were to try as above and also use a fresh new profile there is a near certainty it would work.

Thanks again for your response. Wonder of wonders. In safe mode it would show the flash movie. After restarting in normal mode, it also showed the flash movie. I don't know what changed in the setup, but it is working now.

Edit,

on the third start up the original problem re-appeared.

Glad you seem to be making progress towards a solution.

It may well be one of the extensions causing the problem. I also mentioned clearing cookies, note you should be able to clear cookies selectively for only the problem site. Click on the site button when on fox news, followed by clicking on more information and clear the cookies for that site.

Try disabling 1/2 of your add-ons at a time. See if you can find which one or which combination causes the problem. Clear the fox news cookies after each attempt.

Thanks again.

Deleting all cookies for the web site seems to have solved the problem. Several restarts of the browser (didn't delete cookies again but let them remain) and the videos worked each time. I did take some time to figure out where the "site button" was located as I've never used it before.

Thanks for posting back. Glad it worked.

If anyone else is wondering about the site button I should have provided a link

Unfortunately the problem has re appeared. Deleting the site cookies doesn't correct the problem. Some videos on the site work, this doesn't http://video.foxnews.com/v/1198059995001/a-maine-for-all-seasons but it does work in IE and Chrome, This is really getting frustrating.

Possibly it is one particular piece of software that is causing the problem, and maybe not the first time that the fox news video is run but the second, possibly also, clearing the site cookies works sometimes and not others.

This is only conjecture. Intermittent problems are the hardest ones to solve. Obviously you have other working browsers and are still able to play videos. Your problems seem very specific if it is only some videos on the fox news site that play and some that do not.

As far as you are aware is it only fox news that is the problem, or have you tried other sites with videos are they ok in firefox ?

Are you using security or security related software that could be affecting this. As you have no problems with other browsers do you have something specific to firefox, such as an add-blocker, that could be involved. In addition to ordinary cookies FlashPlayer also uses LSO flash cookies, maybe settings for those, or some other flash player setting needs looking at. Also besides clearing the site cookies clear the browser cache. Flash Player itself also has a hardware acceleration setting, that could affect videos, but tends to affect how they play rather than if they play at all.

Only a problem with the fox news site. All other sites wok OK in Firefox.

Security is the free edition of AVG. Also spybot for spyware. Never heard of LSO cookies, I'll have to research them. Will also try clearing cash again, but even after doing that I still had problems before.

Something strange, the video on this page http://www.foxnews.com/leisure/2011/10/05/trump-debuts-virginia-winery/?test=faces plays, but from the main fox page they do not.

I can play the video from your link, but it pauses before starting, and it plays a video advert trailer before the news article starts.

Apparently with the new Firefox, LSO cookies are treated like http cookies and should have been deleted when cookies are deleted for the site. Also as for checking flash options, I'm unable to launch flash independently or get any of the dialogs on the pages you provided.

I use various versions of Firefox and tend to use an extension to watch the flash cookies, I was forgetting they tend to clear as normal cookies now.

To change FlashPlayers settings wait until the embedded media player has come up and started playing, it lists several options including turning off hardware acceleration. It certainly works when I do that using the links you provided to the fox news site.

It also shows the Flash Player version, and that reminds me that if yours is still 10.3... you are out of date. Check and if necessary update using the about flash player site link. The current version which should show both on that site and on right clicking fox news videos is 11,0,1,152

more options

Earlier I uninstalled both the plug in version and active x versions of Flash player and installed the latest from adobe. So current versions of both are 11.0.1.152. Getting the player information is tricky. On the USA today site I played a movie and had to right click the movie to get the settings information. I deleted all content. Still not working on the fox site. http://video.foxnews.com/v/1201145427001/?test=faces

How about going back to something you tried before

  • Safe mode
    • clear cookies & cache (at least cookies for fox news site)
    • and , use default theme, disable all plugins except Flash Player

Presumably fox news will play again. Then start re-enabling extensions themes and plugins to work out what seems to cause the problem.

I also note the site content at fox news contains 1x1 px .png and other images, also firefox's links bar is listing a lot of urls (I have not tried studying with Firebug). But apparently the site is tracking or collecting stats, and maybe your anti spyware software is being triggered.

I've done what you suggested and the videos will not play. I'm about ready to stop wasting time on this issue. How about You?
