Since buying my latest laptop (HPdv6) with Windows 7 (64 bits), I loaded Firefox 6, which subsequently updated, and every time I click on Firefox icon, I get at least 50 Firefox windows, none of which has my selected homepage and I lose saved tabs every time. I have to delete all but one of the windows (naturally) and then all is well, but I am getting so fed up that I tend to put my laptop into sleep mode at night rather than shutting down (which I prefer not to do). My Vista laptop has no problem. I have tried synchronising the two computers, but only my older laptop works correctly with Firefox.

It is possible that there is a problem with the files sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.

Delete the files sessionstore.js [2] and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.

If you see files sessionstore-##.js with a number in the left part of the name like sessionstore-1.js then delete those as well. Deleting sessionstore.js will cause App Tabs and Tab Groups and open and closed (undo) tabs to get lost, so you will have to create them again (make a note or bookmark them).
