Two "Upgrade" complaints

I used to like Thunderbird, a lot. I've used it for more than 13 years. I have also contributed money - because I believe in paying for a good product. I think Thunderbird is quickly moving away from being a 'good product'.

I have two big complaints now with Thunderbird.

1. Apparently the 'developers' just can't stop themselves from adding more and more "stuff" (called "features"). All I want is a decent email client. The tabs to open PDF attachments was a nice feature, when it was added. However, the vast majority of so-called "features" that have been added over the past few years are useless to me. And it shows in how big the Thunderbird application has become and how long it now takes to load and display.

2. The 'threaded' crap is driving me nuts. It seems like every time Thunderbird updates it puts some/most/all of the folders back to 'sort by threaded' and displaying the thread column and star column. I hate 'threaded'. If you are updating the application why can't you import my 'custom' settings or at least just leave them alone. No, you reset all kinds of stuff with nearly every "update".

I guess I have two options: 1. I will quit updating Thunderbird (disable auto-update, if that's possible). 2. Find a new email client that is simpler, smaller, loads quicker, and is less cluttered with "features".

Thank you for taking a decent product and 'improving' the hell out of it - to the point where I am starting to hate it.

First, please understand that you are posting to the people who have no authority for anything. Your complaint is posted daily here, multiple times, and has been happening since 102 was rolled out in 2022. There is a 'fix' for the dreaded threading feature. Let me know if interested. It's messy, but it works. Want to avoid all future updates? Let me know, as it's doable. Another possibility is to download ver 91. It works smoothly and the profile is compatible, once you delete the compatibility.ini file. It is possible to set up 91 with updates disabled. I have a copy working now and most addons for it are still available. HOWEVER, you are dissatisfied, adding your voice at connect.microsoft.org may help. Click to IDEAS and voice your displeasure there. Let me know. But please, we're just workerbees here. :)

David,

I changed 'Settings | Updates' to "Check but let me choose ..." Hopefully that will stop the automatic updates.

If you have a 'fix' for threading, and if it's not too much trouble for you - let me know and I'll give it a try. Otherwise right now I'm happy to leave this version (115.7.0 32-bit) alone and fix the threading for each folder, as I find them. I think 'threading' is enabled for each new folder created - so I'll just deal with it.

(By 'threading', as I use it above, I mean: 'View | Sort By' and select "unthreaded".)

As to dropping back to version '91' - I'll keep that option open for the future, if needed.

Thank you for your time to respond and for the offers to help.

Changing the default is rather simple: - click to settings and scroll down to 'config editor' near bottom of the pane and click it - enter mailnews.default_view_flags and change value to 0 and save - I suggest entering config editor again and entering that text just to be sure that is 0. Sometimes, it doesn't et set. This sets the default for any new folder to unthreaded. I do share your view and, like you, I hope things get better.

It is even covered in the threading support article, but for some reason folk keep appearing in support forums asking for the process to be personally delivered to them.

How can it be made clearer? So that people actually follow the written instructions. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/message-threading-thunderbird#w_changing-default-threading-mode
