Thunderbird (currently 102.10.0) became extremely slow at reading emails when I went from 91.13.1 to 102, I'm not sure of the full version but I believe it was 102.3.0 . TB no longer correctly reports whether or not I have emails waiting when I first log in. The size of the emails doesn't appear to be relevant. It may be as little as just a couple of lines of type or it may include attachments. The length of time to download is about the same at anywhere from 20 seconds to 1+ minutes. When I track it on the task manager, of the 4 images of TB there are always 2 images of TB seemingly active at the same time when I Get Message. One image is very large while the other is much smaller relatively. All of this with both the Scam Detection and Antivirus turned off. After reading a number of the entries on the forum, I performed some of the steps suggested. Here is a synopsis of what I did and what I saw.

Put TB in SAFE mode. Sent a message. Did Get Message(GM). Task manager showed only one large TB image active, not the usual two mentioned above. Download was the usual long time. Sent a second message and had the same results. Turned off SAFE mode. Did another Send and Get 2 more times. Task manager showed the two images active. Response times were slow. Turned on SAFE mode again and repeated as above. Results were the same - one active image and slow response.

Started Windows 7 Pro in SAFE mode with internet. Started task manager and TB in normal mode. Sent a message. Did Get Message and the mail was downloaded immediately. Sent a second message and had the same result.

Started Windows in normal mode. Turned off email antivirus and smart firewall features in Norton 360. Repeated test scenario as above. The results were the same as I stated in the begining of this submission.

If there is anything else I can add that would help me to get Thunderbird back to normal, please let me know.

I read there was to be an updated version of TB in the July/August time frame. Being reluctant to do an un-install and re-install I decided to wait for the upgrade, expecting an install would be required for what looks to be a major change.. As it turns out the upgrade will be done piecemeal over a period of time and possibly without the need to do a complete install. I returned to searching for additional suggestions for my problem. One thing I have seen a number of times is the recommendation to not perform an un-install/re-install since that is most likely not going to resolve the issue. That being the case, I assume the problem lies in the profile dataset. Does anyone have suggestions as to what I might look for or where and how I should try to find something in my profile. I would appreciate any help I can get.

Hi Wayne.

Thank you for that. I had performed some of the steps but was missing the additional ones in that list. Looks like it will take a while to get all of that completed. Here's hoping it resolves my issues.

Update: I have been going through the 27 steps of the document sent earlier. Item 22 refers to filter logging. I went to take a look, something I haven't done in the past. There were entries from as far back as 3 years. As I was trying to get through the log, the system seemed to be bogging down. It wasn't accepting any input. I decided to clear the log but nothing seemed to happen. I left the system thinking there might be a lot of clean up. A half hour later nothing appeared to have changed - there were still the same entries on my screen. I gave it another half hour and when it seemed like nothing changed I decided to shut TB down. I re-started TB and went to the filter log. It was empty/cleared. TB still didn't accept input. I checked task manager (TM) and found TB taking up more and more memory as well as CPU time. I watched the numbers climb. Decided to let it go to see what would happen. I watched it for 5 minutes. Memory use went from the usual 260MB to 1.15GB with CPU at as high as 47%. I stopped and restarted TB, went through the same process of accessing the logfile and got the same results. It would certainly appear to be in some kind of loop. I don't know if this has anything to do with my slow downloads.

You'll need to find and delete filterlog.html for that account.

Found and deleted the file. Started Task Manager(TM). Started TB, went to Tools>Message Filters. TM displayed normal activity. Went to Filter Log, popup said filelog was missing and kept flashing, TM numbers for memory and CPU started rising as they did before. Let it run for a few minutes and watched the numbers bounce up and down. I stopped TB when it had 951MB. Checked for the file, it had been created, it was empty. Restarted TB, went threough the same steps and got the same results. Sent a couple of emails, they took as long as they have been, checked the filelog by using the tool and also directly reading it. Contents were there for the emails.

In my continued efforts to solve my email problem, I deleted all of the .msf files associated with my account. I thought TB would recreate the .msf files when TB was restarted, that according to other items I read on the forum. I have started and stopped TB a number of times and the only index files created are for files that I have accessed directly (E.G. Inbox, Trash, Sent, Draft). Have I missed something?
