re:I do not have AV except for MS Defender. I use CCleaner to cleanup. I ran several free malware programs with no problems listed.

MS Defender is the computer Anti-Virus program. By default it scans everything. You may have scheduled scans. Any email you upload or download - it's an incoming or outgoing file - it scans files. It will also scan any file that gets opened.

If you want to use CCleanup and other free malware programs then I strongly recommend you do not allow them any access to any Thunderbird profile folder or file. Thunderbird must be made exempt. You are likely to have more problems if those programs get any access to Thunderbird.

re :restarting computer in 'Safe Mode with Networking' mode. You report : The SAFE BOOT Mode appears to not have any problems.

This confirms the likely problem - your Anti-Virus product is doing a lot of scanning. eg: When you compose an email, it gets a copy of draft saved - this means opening file to write to the file and also with imap uploading to server.

Suggest you try to stop/limit the scanning. Suggest you read info at the following link: https://www.windowscentral.com/how-exclude-files-and-folders-windows-defender-antivirus-scans

re: I attempted to reinstall 91.4.1 and caused Opera to be installed?

Opera is a web browser and nothing to do with Thunderbird. If using the official download location: Either : https://www.thunderbird.net/ OR: https://www.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/all/

then it's not be possible to download Opera. Uninstall Opera if you do not want it.

You mean 91? You should get it from https://www.thunderbird.net/

Sorry, no success. I did delete one of my Email addresses. (Comcast.net) It never worked in TB anyway. Seemed much better now. But still have no responses, but not near as often. When no response is displayed, after about 2-3 min. it works again?(not always) the hyper link you sent is quite old and almost nothing is valid in Win 10.? or ver 91.4.1 I don't understand why my Google calendar in TB requires a PW. (this is new? never did before) BUT Mozilla has the Google calendar without any pw?

If this is not fixed soon, I must use a different mail program. TB User for a very long time.

The most common reason for a non responsive temporary pause is caused by your Anti-Virus product scanning either newly opened files or files being downloaded or uploaded.

You can test this by restarting computer in 'Safe Mode with Networking' mode. You may need to use an ethernet cable. Then start Thunderbird and wait to see if you get a those non reponsive pauses. This is a standard test and you would need to report on the results, so we can rule the Anti-Virus is a cause or not. Do not just switch off/disable Anti-Virus, it is best to completely be sure it is not running on a temporary basis.

You may find Thunderbird improves if you do not allow AV to scan Thunderbird profile files and folders.

Google requires all devices that access the Google account to use a password. Google does not permit anyone access to any account without a password. If password is stored in Thunderbird then Google does not ask for password, so you would not necessarilly be aware that a password was being used. Email can be set up to use OAuth2, so a token is stored in Thunderbird. You will find Google will allow access to various things including websites using a simple Google login.

Whilst the hyperlink was contructed some time ago, it is still very relevant. Some of the links have been updated. The information on Compacting is still very relevant and maybe part of the problem you are experiencing, " Compacting a folder frees wasted space but the main reason to do it regularly is because it's a type of preventative maintenance. If you don't compact your folders regularly, performance can slow to a crawl, you can't store new messages anymore, start losing parts of messages or have deleted messages resurrected." This is a link to a more up to date info: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/compacting-folders Make sure you compact folders on a regular basis especially Inbox, Drafts, and Junk/Spam as this removes all old previously deleted emails cluttering up the file. If you have folders that are large - loads of emails, then consider creating some new folders or subfolders to organise emails as this means smaller files.

'Mozbackup' is no longer maintained and therefore I would not advise to use. 'ImportExportTools' used on older versions has been updated to 'ImportExportTools NG' https://addons.thunderbird.net/en-us/thunderbird/addon/importexporttools-ng/

I do not have AV except for MS Defender. I use CCleaner to cleanup. I ran several free malware programs with no problems listed. The SAFE BOOT Mode appears to not have any problems. I have to use Google Mail to read / send stuff. Google would be my preferred program to replace TB if it is not fixed soon. HELP?

My TB appears to be working now. I saw that I Had about 100 emails that were being loaded????? (why so many?) because, I thought it was "not responding" and they were accumulating. Then I would see at the bottom of the border that it was d/l 23 of 75, then 24 of 75. etc. I waited until all the notes were d/l and then everything seems to work now. Thanx.

Hope it continues to work well as before.

My TB is still sick, But, I found out that the Microsoft Defender Firewall is VERY busy while the TB is not responding. I have turned off the firewall and the TB seems perfect??? Any suggestions to a non IT person about this or an alternate firewall that works.

Microsoft tasks show that the Antimalware Microsoft Defender is crunching at 30%.
