Thank you, I had already gone through the updates with multiple restarts, and had noted a Firefox update between the time I last used it and the problem began. After an uninstall/reinstall failed to fix it, I uninstalled and manually removed all registry keys--that finally seems to have fixed it.

Needless to say, I have turned off all Firefox auto updates and will go back to treating Firefox like Windows, testing updates before I install them. As I hadn't had issues with Firefox updates in so long, I got lazy and decided to trust them. My fault.

Hi csperati, where are you doing this:

Can you successfully open a new window from within Firefox using:

  • Regular window: Ctrl+n
  • Private window: Ctrl+Shift+p
  • Link in new window: right-click > Open Link in New Window
  • Link in new private window: right-click > Open Link in New Private Window

I'm right clicking on the icon on my taskbar. I've removed that icon and pinned a new one first from the start menu and when that didn't work I created a new shortcut from the Mozilla folder in the programs folder and then pinned that one. Still doesn't work.

CTRL-N does the same thing. CTRL-Shift-P does open a private window correctly Links open correctly in both.

It is just a problem opening a new window when there is already a window open from the pinned icon on the task bar. Opening tabs is not a problem and I can use that as a workaround by dragging the window away, but that's it's frustrating as I open a lot of Mozilla windows while doing research.

And yes, I have cleared the cache and gone through all the basic troubleshooting steps and searched through the forums.

Hmm, Ctrl+n should always work. Do you recall when this problem started?

Are there any command-line options on your shortcut (or pinned taskbar icon)? Either:

  • Right-click a Firefox desktop shortcut, then click Properties
  • Right-click a Firefox icon pinned to the Taskbar then right-click Mozilla Firefox, then click Properties

Windows should show the Shortcut tab and select the Target field. The Target usually is along the following lines:

  • "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe"
  • "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe"

Is there anything extra after that?

The issue began this morning. I was out of town with my PC powered off for several days, this morning I powered it on and noticed this problem when I began to work.

The target field reads: C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe There are no additional characters or command line options.

I do not have this trouble with Chrome. With open windows, I can right click and select "open in new window" with no issues.

If you haven't already, try doing a regular windows shutdown/restart to fix any startup privilege issues and complete any deferred/pending updates.
