When Firefox updated to Quantum some time ago I somehow lost my bookmarks so I imported them from IE11. Now all my bookmarks are OK but they are all listed under the heading "From Internet Explorer". I have not used Sync since then as I wasn't sure what would happen. If I sync now will it download bookmarks from the cloud that are now out of date? Or will it upload my current Bookmarks? This would be fine - but can I get rid of the IE heading?

More than likely you'll end up with a lot of duplicates, assuming the IE Favorites that were Imported after the Quantum update are already in the Sync server from the last time you used Sync.

It's a shame that you waited so long before asking for support here.

Many thanks for your speedy reply. Agreed I have left it too long !

Is it possible to get rid of the "From Internet Explorer" heading?

Probably not. Might if it is in bookmarks.html and open it in a web editor. Always as never know what will happen. :

Bookmarks imported from another browser are always placed in a specific folder with the browser name. You will have to move (copy/cut and paste) the bookmarks in the "From IE" folder to a folder in the Bookmarks Menu folder or Bookmarks Toolbar folder.

You can possibly try out in a separate profile to see what happens if you use Sync and export the synced bookmarks to an HTML file.

Thanks for all replies but having looked at all the support pages I'm still not sure how Sync actually works. If I sign-in to Sync now will it download all the older bookmarks that were NOT headed Internet Explorer? If so, that should give me a load of duplicate Folders as that is how my bookmarks are organised. Then I could just delete the current stuff that IS headed Internet Explorer. Would this work? If so, I'd just be missing the few more recent bookmarks. And as I have HTML exports of both the pre and post IE bookmarks, I could easily compare those to find missing items. Hope this makes sense !

Hi, ya does in a weird way, can figure it out and is not weird. Go for it if have the backups and do not mind deleting or having to add back again.

If you are not Syncing 2 devices that is not what Sync is for. You do not mention another device an if you are using Firefox Sync as a back up service. This is not what Sync is designed to do. The Firefox Sync service takes a copy of the data you wish to include and transfers it to a second device (typically a mobile device such as a tablet or a telephone) running a copy of Firefox. The storage in between all attached devices is both temporary and fragile and is not stable enough to be (and is not designed as) a reliable backup service. It can be a mess to deal with.

If you have a copy of your Firefox profile for desktop Firefox, you may be able to recover your bookmarks and other data. Please have a read of these article.

If you have a copy of your data on a mobile version of Firefox, please follow these instructions to connect it to Firefox Sync to copy your data.

Pkshadow : No I am not using it as backup. I am syncing between two laptops, one in UK and one abroad, tablet and phone.

BTW, how actually do I backup my bookmarks?

Yesterday I rebooted after a Windows update and all my bookmarks had disappeared again ! Restore would not work despite a long list of possible dates. Import from various HTML I had saved would not work. I had to import from IE again.
