Why does thunderbird change the order of my emails every time I close it and open it again?

When i close thunderbird and open it my emails are rearranged in to a different order. I.E. If I have arranged them with the most recent at the top. When I close Thunderbird and open it again often (but not always, grh!) the emails are ordered with the most recent at the bottom. Also sometimes when I open Th/bird the first of my 4 email addresses doesn't show any folders. I have used Th/bird for many years and I've never known it so unstable. Another fault: the emails relating to some folders don't start to load until I actually click on the folder.

First I must apologise for mistakenly referring to the Thunderbird version as 54. I think you were perhaps too diplomatic in not pointing it out that this is the current Firefox version, of course. My Thunderbird version is now as you recommend; we give it a day and see what happens.
