Thanks Fred; I did update my graphics driver to the latest version.

The first time after updating it seemed to work fine. The next time I tried to login to Amex, I got the black screen. I then right clicked on the black page and clicked on "open in reader view" (add on I have installed) which brought up a new tab - blank but white instead of black. I switched back to my original login tab, and the screen was as it should be at the my account page of Amex.

This is really weird! I just this minute tried to login again and it worked although I got the black screen for a second or two before the page loaded. I logged out and tried to login again and got the black screen. I just tried something else: a right click on the black page for "view page source" and a new tab opened showing the code (I presume) for the page. Closed that tab and I was back to the original tab and the my accounts view was there.

I'm stumped! I know I've found a couple of work arounds, but I'd really like to get this fixed. Any other suggestions?

Did some more experimenting and found that after I've tried to log in to Amex and got the black screen, if I move to another open tab, then go back to the tab for Amex, the accounts screen is now there. Just occasionally the black screen will disappear almost immediately and page will load. Very strange.

Is it possible that this is a Flashplayer problem?

The Flash Player only handles clips and such. Next time; after the page loads, hold down the <Shift> key and reload the page.

It could be a minor graphics incompatibility between Firefox and your system, or it could be the site is using some kind of fade transition or other technique that is not running to completion in Firefox. Hard to say. (Usually a failed fade-out/fade-in leaves a white page.)

If the problem starts to affect other sites, you could try this:

As an experiment, try disabling OMTC. This feature was added in Firefox 33, but seems to be acting up with Nvidia cards in Firefox 48 for some users.

(0) Select and copy the following new preference name:

layers.offmainthreadcomposition.force-disabled

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.

(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste layers.off and pause while the list is filtered

(3) Right-click a blank area of the page, click New, then Boolean

(4) Paste the preference name, then click OK

(5) Select true, then click OK

The preference should appear in the list, bolded, and user set to true. If you need to remove this later, right-click > Reset it

I think you probably need to restart Firefox before that takes effect.

Doesn't matter whether I use the reload button in the address bar or press F5 (with or without the shift key). The only thing that seems to work consistently is moving to another tab and then back again. An annoyance to be sure, but at least it's a simple enough thing to do. I'm still thinking it's a glitch on the Amex site. I'll try contacting them again.

Well, I finally got back here. (life got in the way for a while) At any rate, it seems the problem has resolved itself - someone or something made it work again the way it should, which makes me very happy.
