As of yesterday at approx 12:15 my Thunderbird just stopped working. I can't even get it to come up on my screen. I have tried from my desktop icon, going into all programs and then clicking the Thunderbird program and it will not even start. I believe that their was an automatic update yesterday which may have effected my system. I can get all other internet sites. I have turned off my microsoft defender and also my up to date Norton. turned off machine numerous times and it still won't come back.

I run my business from this email program and I need to know if I can get this back on. If I remove the program completley and then re-install it would I loose all the emails that I have already on the Thunderbird.

Help please

Cheers

Laurie

Hi Laurie, since you're running your business from your computer you should be making regular backups of your data anyway. I know from sad experience that computers can fail at any time (not just from updates), and if you haven't got stuff backed up you've lost the lot. So the first thing you need to do is to make a copy of your Thunderbird profile. This is a folder on your computer which contains all your emails, account settings etc. There are instructions here on how to find it: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Thunderbird Once you have found it, copy the whole folder to an external storage medium. Personally I use a USB memory stick, but they are not 100% reliable; since your data are business critical I would advise an external hard drive. Once you have made a backup and have it secure, you can uninstall Thunderbird (use the Windows Control Centre) and then re-install it afresh. You then need to replace your profile folder. There are instructions here on how to do it: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profiles-tb#w_restoring-to-a-different-location You'll see that those instructions are about moving your profile from one computer to another. But the principle is the same in your case, in effect you are saving your profile from your computer and then putting it back again. Read through the instructions carefully and make sure you understand them before you attempt the procedure!

Thanks for the assistance and for the record I do backup all my files onto a separate hard drive. I did as you suggested, saved again onto a brand new USB stick, deleted the program, re installed it and bingo... all up and going.

Thanks for the great help

Regards
