All of Firefox's code is open source and is open to patches from all levels of developers. As a user however, I can only recommend adding votes to the bug in order to show a level of impact for this particular bug.

My reading of the Bug is that there is a problem with the mail server. How Thunderbird is supposed to fix buggy server setups I do not know. But that might explain why it has not been fixed. No one else knows either.
