Firefox 40 displays the Mozilla website as text only

This happens since the update to Firefox 40. Firefox displays all other websites I tested normally. Chrome displays the Mozilla.org website correctly. The issue also shows in Safe mode. It persists through a reinstallation of Firefox. Deleting Cookies and Cache does not help.

hi, please try to disable https scanning within avast:

  1. Open the Avast dashboard on the affected system.
  2. Select Settings from the left sidebar menu.
  3. Switch to Active Protection.
  4. Click on Customize next to Web Shield.
  5. Uncheck the "Enable HTTPS Scanning" option and click ok.

That seems rather odd. Short of having scriptblockers or malware targeting the site it would be unusual for only that site not to work.

What happens if you try other versions of the site, do they work ?

Please try with a new additional Firefox profile, that will not have changed with a standard new install

You can check the Net log and the Network log in the Web Console (Firefox/Tools > Web Developer) to see if content fails to load or possibly is blocked (file size is zero).

Use Ctrl+F5 or Ctrl+Shift+R to reload the page and bypass the cache to generate a fresh log.

The issue is the same on different language versions and also with a new profile.

No, I can't open Web Console, because that crashes Firefox.

Have you got the crash report, or if it is not actually crashing then a screenshot and a copy of any error message. When I say crash report all we need is the Crash ID, the string of letters and numbers beginning with bp- that you may find when you navigate to about:crashes

I can reproduce a crash of Firefox in three ways with 100% reliability: 1. click on the + icon to open a new tab 2. click on a picture within a wikipedia article to enlarge it 3. try to open the Firefox Net Log

I tried to completely uninstall Firefox, including the user settings by following these instructions: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Uninstalling_Firefox, but this didn't solve any of the issues.

I know how to fix the the new tab issue, but not the other issues.

Windows has been updated from Windows 7 to Windows 10 and I also exchanged my old Nvidia card for a new AMD graphics card recently, not sure if either is part of the problem.

Below is a screenshot of this very page opened in Firefox and one of the Firefox Health Report, displaying a 'Secure Connection Failed' error.

I just installed a Windows security update, that was offered today and the crashes no longer happen. The issues with the Mozilla website not being displayed correctly and the Secure Connection Failed error at the Firefox Health Report are still there, though. But now I can view the Web Console.

Yes, that solved it. Still curious why this started to be an issue right now and never was before for me. Also the timely coincidence with the issue caused by a Windows security fix that was solved by another Windows security fix. That was so annoying. Really big thank you to all who answered. Can't really imagine to use Chrome or IE or Edge.
