What happened to the red X at top right of screen & icons to minimize or maximize page to tray at bottom?

The top right hand corner where the red X to close and Min & Max icons were, is now a black oblong space. It has been this way for a week or so. I have used the arrow to shrink my page to fit within the desktop screen to no avail. I just clicked on BROWSE below this box... the red square showed up with a black background.... text to far left said "File upload"... under that "Desktop"

  1. Go to the problematic Firefox window.
  2. Press [Windows Key] + [Print]
  3. Press [Windows Key] + [R]
  4. Type mspaint
  5. Click on OK
  6. Press [Ctrl] + [V]
  7. Press [Ctrl] + [S]
  8. Save the screenshots on your desktop.
  9. Below the reply box click on Browse
  10. Select the screenshots from your desktop

Thanks Tobias

You mentioned that you have Windows Vista, but your Firefox reported Windows XP. This could happen if you set Firefox to run in Compatibility mode. It's not fatal because of course Firefox does run on XP, but it might be glitchier than letting Firefox take full advantage of Vista.

To check on that, you can right-click your Firefox shortcut, open Properties, then the Compatibility tab. Normally nothing is set on this tab. Does yours have anything set?
