I installed the latest update, then when I open Firefox there was a scaling problem so everything was huge and zoomed in too much. I went into about:config and was changing the layout.css.devPixelPerPixel (or something similar) when it crashed. Now when I open it, a 'Session Manager' box comes up, but it's very smal and the scaling is still zoomed in and illegible (re-sizing the box does nothing). I press 'Enter' cause I figure the default option is 'Restore Session', the box disappears but Firefox doesn't launch, but does begin a process. When I close the process or re-start the computer, I can go through it again but Firefox still doesn't open. I can't get into it to open Safe mode or Refresh it or anything.

In my crashreports folder, there are four 'pending' reports. I don't know how to post them, if someone lets me know I'll post them. I'm on the latest Ubuntu, I had a few plug-ins but I can't remember them all, these are the ones I remember: Session Manager, Ghostery, NoScript, AdBlock, Reddit Enhancement Suite, Buffer.

If you make a back up of the profile it is possible to reinstall with a clean profile then add it back later to submit the reports.

Back up and restore information in Firefox profiles

Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a Clean reinstall. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:

Note: You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.

  1. Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from mozilla.org (or choose the download for your operating system and language from this page) and save the setup file to your computer.
  2. After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (or open the Firefox menu New Fx Menu and click the close button Close 29).
  3. Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
    • Windows:
      • C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
      • C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
    • Mac: Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
    • Linux: If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see Install Firefox on Linux. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the Firefox download page, simply remove the folder firefox in your home directory.
  4. Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
    1. Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
    2. Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.

More information about reinstalling Firefox can be found here.

WARNING: Do not use a third party uninstaller as part of this process. Doing so could permanently delete your Firefox profile data, including but not limited to, extensions, cache, cookies, bookmarks, personal settings and saved passwords. These cannot be easily recovered unless they have been backed up to an external device! See Back up and restore information in Firefox profiles.

Please report back to say if this helped you!

Thank you.

Ok, so: I reinstalled but it didn't work until I deleted my old profile (I backed it up), now when I open Firefox, the scaling is all wrong. The tabs are huge and the window showing the webpage is very smalled and zoomed-in so much that I can't read anything. I went into about:config and changed the devPixelperPixel thing, 0.99 seemed to work ok. Then when I put back my backed-up profile, I get the same problem with Session Manager and I can't open Firefox.

You can go to the Firefox profile folder. See if you can open the about:support page via the location/address bar and click the Show Folder button (Profile Directory: Show Folder) to go to the Firefox profile folder.

If that isn't possible then you can find the Firefox profile folder here:

The "AppData" folder in Windows Vista and later Window 7+ versions and the "Application Data" folder in XP/Win2K are hidden folders.

You can edit the prefs.js file (right-click: Open with) in a text editor like Notepad. Look for this line:

  • user_pref("layout.css.devPixelsPerPx", "xx.xx");

You can delete this line or possibly change it to:

  • user_pref("layout.css.devPixelsPerPx", "1.0");

And to follow up on Firefox not opening, what steps were taken in the new profile to restore these backups?

Were the json files created by Firefox or Session Manager?

Well, I managed to open Firefox again by editing the pref.js file, thank you cor-el for the solution and guigs for the help.

Unfortunately, the scaling is still all wrong in this new update of Firefox. Before when I would zoom in, the entire page would get bigger so I could focus on the text or main content and browse enjoyable. Now the pages seem to be in some kind of fixed grid so the main content gets physically biigger but it's still restricted to the central grid-section so I still have to strain to read and the text ends up mashed into one tiny column. There's also a problem of the down key not working to scroll down the page as much anymore, which is very annoying. Overall it makes browsing the internet a lot less enjoyable.

FF on Windows either hasn't been updated or else the updates haven't been as annoying and seems to work fine. I'll be having a look at Opera to see if it provides a better browsing experience and at rolling back Firefox. If I really have to, I'll look at Chrome, but as a last option.
