the add on from Electronic frontier foundation called https everywhere is this of any value? This add-on is suppose to "On a supported site, it will automatically activate HTTPS encryption for all known supported parts of the site"

It appears Firefox itself would perform this task by itself?

No. The project site says:

"Many sites on the web offer some limited support for encryption over HTTPS, but make it difficult to use. For instance, they may default to unencrypted HTTP, or fill encrypted pages with links that go back to the unencrypted site. The HTTPS Everywhere extension fixes these problems by using a clever technology to rewrite requests to these sites to HTTPS."

Firefox activates HTTPS when a site wants you to use HTTPS and the user doesn't request optional HTTP if both, HTTP and HTTPS is supported. The HTTPS Everywhere add-on tries to use "hidden"/optional HTTPS support on sites that support it.

It's seems, this extension can be trusted, but of course doesn't solve the problem of many sites that neither support HTTPS by default nor offer HTTPS optionally. An example of a site currently supporting both and only HTTPS in the futue is http://www.wikipedia.org/ and https://www.wikipedia.org/

Thanks wuergler. I agree with you findings but consider it because TOR has it installed by default.
