I suspect malicious malware is allowing remote hacker access that I am unable to defeat. But just in case I'm overlooking something obvious, is there any other issue when clicking on an action that would cause no response within Firefox? Rebooting did not reset anything. Clicking on any selected action to backup bookmarks is unproductive and causes no matching response from Firefox program.

There are several things to try;

It could be the work of one of your add-ons, or even add / mal-ware. Open your Add-ons Manager <Control><Shift> A and make sure you know what each one is and what it does.

Some added toolbar and anti-virus add-ons are known to cause Firefox issues. Disable All of them.

Also, check the programs that are on your computer

Windows: Start > Control Panel > Uninstall Programs. Mac: Open the "Applications" folder. Linux: Check your user manual.

Go thru the list. If you find something that you don't know what it is, use a web search.

Start your Computer in safe mode. Then start Firefox. Try Safe web sites.

Starting The Computer In Safe Mode;

If running, turn your computer off. Remove any disks and thumb drives that are in your hard drives or ports. Now start your computer but also;

Windows; Press the <F8> key repeatedly. Mac: Hold down the Shift key. Linux; Using the command line, Linux/Unix computers can be booted into various run levels that determine which resources are loaded. For example, "runlevel 1" is typically the equivalent to Windows and Mac safe modes.

When the Boot menu is displayed, release the key you were pressing. You must now choose what mode to use. The most used are;

  • Safe Mode; The computer runs with only a minimum set of programs.
  • Safe Mode With Networking; Same as above, but with internet access.

These add-ons can be a great help by backing up and restoring Firefox

FEBE (Firefox Environment Backup Extension) {web link} FEBE allows you to quickly and easily backup your Firefox extensions, history, passwords, and more. In fact, it goes beyond just backing up -- It will actually rebuild your saved files individually into installable .xpi files. It will also make backup of files that you choose.

Sorry for the delay--implementing your suggestions.

   1. Disabled all add ons and the bookmark actions were still non responsive.
   2. Checked Add/Remove and found no obvious entries.
   3. Entered Safe mode and was able to export my bookmarks. Wrote them to CD upon return to normal mode. Also found the past 5 days of bookmark backups in Profile folder with JSONLX4 extension. Not my doing.
   4. Troubleshooting malware effects yields more non response when clicking 'save link as' and 'print'. No printing or downloading audio. Wifi drops whenever attempting to listen or watch streaming. Slow spinning wheels for loading after reconnect.
   5. I use Avast, Malwarebytes Premium, Spybot, Emsisoft and Rkill from Bleepingcomputer. Since they find nothing, I assume the malware has disabled detection and continues to operate freely.
   6. We changed ISP's 3 weeks ago and the tampering was immediate and aggressive, including new email interference. Malware and remote access is what I suspected, so Firefox is a victim and not to blame.

Thanks for your help in narrowing it down.

Sometimes a problem with Firefox may be a result of malware installed on your computer, that you may not be aware of.

You can try these free programs to scan for malware, which work with your existing antivirus software:

Microsoft Security Essentials is a good permanent antivirus for Windows 7/Vista/XP if you don't already have one.
