Page full of random characters in 'write' and 'reply' pages

Using Thunderbird in Windows 10: Every time I open 'write' or reply to any email I get a page full of random characters. I have to delete the page full of characters first before I can create or send a reply. This has only happened in the last two or three months and is most inconvenient.
