cursor moves but doesn't activate

Since upgrading to Thunderbird 45.8 on my macOS High Sierra the cursor isn't working for general editing purposes. You can't activate the subject line and you can't do general editing of the text with the cursor. You can always see the cursor, but it's sort of dead.
