I have a brand new computer and I can't get Firefox 43.0.4 x64 to start. The computer came with Win 8.1 x64 and am now running Win 10 (1511). I can get it to start if Windows is in safe mode, however, starting Firefox in safe mode doesn't help. So it's definitely a conflict with something and I'm guessing it's a display driver. It's not my antivirus (Avast). This machine has an Intel HD 4600 and an NVIDIA Geforce GTX 860M.

What happens is Firefox is running according to Task Manager but a window never opens.

Both graphics drivers are up-to-date according to the manufacturer.

Any suggestions? Have tried clean installs, manual folder deletions, etc. to no avail. I have also tried disabling hardware acceleration in FF from Windows safe mode.

Thanks

You have NVidia’s network access manager or Forceware Network Manager software installed. Disable / remove it. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/connectivity-crashing-firefox-43-update

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web Link} by holding down the <Shift>
(Mac=Options)
key, and then starting Firefox. Is the problem still there?

While still in Safe Mode,

Type about:support in the address bar and press Enter. Under the main banner, press the button; Copy Text To Clipboard.. Then in the reply box at the bottom of this page, do a right click in the box and select Paste. This will show us your system details. No Personal Information Is Collected.

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately I don't have those listed in my installed programs. The only NVIDIA ones listed are GeForce Experience, the Graphics Driver, and PhysX System Software. I tried renaming some network-related NVIDIA files from safe mode (e.g. NvNetworkService.exe) but that didn't help either.

Maybe they've buried Forceware in the newer software, but I can't seem to find it...?

Try to create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problem.

See "Creating a profile":

If the new profile works then you can transfer files from a previously used profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over problems.

Try to disable HTTPS scanning in Avast Web Shield.

Thanks, not either of those unfortunately. I don't even have the web shield installed although I did try disabling the file shield. Profiles make no difference. I'm pretty sure it has something to do with an Intel 4600 driver though, I'm going to try updating those to newer versions from the Intel site, although Acer hasn't provided updated versions from themselves directly.

Well, I installed some updated Intel drivers and they haven't fixed the problem. Guess I'm stuck with x86 Firefox for now, which works fine.
