Hello New to TB, it's working well. My question is that I can't find a setting that causes emails to be downloaded immediately from the server as soon as they are received. Is there one?

The only available settings I can find are

Check for new messages at startup Check for new messages every (minimum 1 minute) Allow immediate server notifications when new messages arrive

If I have all of these checked then I should get an immediate sound and/or visual notification when a new message arrives on the server and I can see its header, so what is the significance of the "check for new messages every (set to 1 minute)" setting? Does that mean it will download all messages, including bodies, received in the last minute without any user input?

Subject: Thunderbird fails to send multiple PDF attachments – Server timed out

I am using Thunderbird on Linux Mint 21.3.

Thunderbird sends ordinary emails without problems. However, when I attach two specific PDF files received by email from my bank, sending fails with the error message “Server timed out”. The message cannot even be saved as a draft.

The files are very small (148 kB and 54 kB).

I have established the following:

Each PDF can be sent individually from Thunderbird after renaming it.

Sending the two PDFs together fails, even after renaming them.

Forwarding the original email containing the attachments also fails.

Sending the same attachments together via GMX Webmail works immediately.

Other emails sent through Thunderbird work normally.

This appears to be a Thunderbird-specific problem involving multiple attachments or the processing of the original email, rather than file size or a general mail-server outage.

Could you advise how to diagnose this issue and identify the cause?

System: Linux Mint 21.3 (Virginia), 64-bit.

I type enter and there is an extra blank line

Like this

I can't seem to find a way to stop it.

It doesn't affect bullet lists:

  • Bulleted list item
  • Bulleted list item

But I can't provide a tidy chunk of information, e.g. when providing my Address to someone (where bulleting doesn't make sense)

Probably something obvious - I tried from 'Format' menu changing from 'Paragraph' to 'Body Text' but it doesn't seem to stick.

FOUND IT: From MAIN APPLICATION window Menu...Edit...Settings...UNCHECK 'Use Paragraph format instead of Body Text by default' I must have checked it at some stage (or maybe it's the default)

Sometimes I enjoy a conversation with myself...but in any case maybe someone else could find this useful.

Example why question is being asked:

Three separate GMX email accounts, each with its own unique password, and NOW Application-specific password for Thunderbird. Aliases are not used or desired. Three different separate accounts that should each have its own outgoing server.

Worked fine until updates to Thunderbird and changes to the GMX server, and Application-specific passwords became a requirement to send and receive email.

Seems like updates to nearly every program and/or app that may be released with the intent to resolve an issue or include a new feature breaks something else. M$ is horrible with updates and labels nearly everything as a critical update so it gets pushed through even when updates are turned off or supposedly permanently disabled by a registry hack; Windows 11 being the absolute worse ever. Why I only have one computer with M$ while all the others are Linux. Problems all the time with M$ while Linux simply continues to work.

Regardless, can setup each GMX account but the default email account name must be used as the user name on the other two GMX accounts on the outgoing server in order to send email. Then the recipient sees the name for the default account rather than the name assigned to the other two accounts, and the Application-specific password for Thunderbird must be changed to that of the default. Then attempting to pull down email for the other two pop accounts comes to a halt, and email messages can only be viewed by going to the online account.

Two separate accounts for yahoo, two for gmail, and one for Charter work fine, each has its own name and outgoing server. Should be the same way for GMX but is not because Thunderbird requires one of the three GMX accounts is set to Default.

Appears by having a Default email account, users are not only restricted by the default account, but email that is sent is done so with he incorrect name, The purpose for three different emails is for email segregation and better management; personal correspondence, business related, and Internet stuff.

Instead of having a 'Default' email account, makes more sense to use a valid email to register Thunderbird after downloading and installing, and then using that email for Support, Boards, assistance, etc. The default email requirement causes too many frustrating unneeded issues that should not occur, along with wasted time, stress and grief. Computers were suppose to make our lives easier and allow us more time for the real world. Biggest lie told since the Bell Labs created the transistor.

When I click "extensions" under Tools > Add-ons and Themes, I get the following message:

Sorry, you have been blocked You are unable to access thunderbird.net

I.e. going from https://addons.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/search/ to https://addons.thunderbird.net/En-uS/thunderbird/extensions/

This happens in Thunderbird, Firefox and Vivaldi, both from my job or my home network (using NordVPN). Funnily search still works, so I suspect the link itself might be broken. Cloudflare tells me to contact the site owner, but they have made themselves incommunicado and refer me to community support who obviously aren't able to fix the problem!

(It is also disconcerting that Cloudflare asks me to enable cookies in Thunderbird, which is a huge privacy issue. However I get the same error in browsers with cookies enabled, so that is not the real issue here.)

Good Day,

When sending email to a list in my address book, I get the error stating that its not a valid email address and to verify it is in the User@Host format. However, if I right click on the list name and choose EXPAND LIST and it then correctly displays all the email addresses and names, and it sends completely fine and without issue ?

Any ideas have to fix that issue ? Thank you in advance for your assistance.

I'm using Thunderbird 153.5.Oesr (64-bit) on a Linux machine (Zorin OS).

Most of my email addresses use POP, but with a new email address, I decided to use IMAP. When I'm disconnected from the internet, that particular email address keeps checking for new emails and saying it can't connect. I don't WANT it to connect. A message pops up every few seconds or so and is very annoying. I need to unplug my ethernet cable/adaptor periodically, since it seems to overheat, so keeping it connected to the internet continually won't work.

I have un-selected the boxes in Server Settings to check for messages. See the images below.

Any ideas? Thanks!

Trying to install Thunderbird (the EN-GB) version on Linux using apt. I have found the package to install using the help and used apt-get install thunderbird-l10n-en-gb This command also pulls as a requisite the base thunderbird (the "en-US"/default version) which may or may not be reasonable? When I go into thunderbird help after the install finishes the "about" still shows "Mozilla Thunderbird Debian Package en-US" I know the difference is only subtle (small spellings etc) but I would like to have some confidence in what I am actually running, Is this a bug or was it just never checked? I have attached the help about image below.

I am a bit of a noob, and probably out of my depth, so please bear with me. It also is a bit of a confusing situation so I hope that I can explain it clearly.

A while ago, Thunderbird stopped working. Whenever I tried starting it up, I got an error message saying that Thunderbird wasn't responding. I thought there might be a problem with some update so I decided that I would reinstall the program. As I went to back up my profile, I found out that there were actually two profile folders where in the past I would only find one. I chose to back up both, and procede with de- and re-installing Thunderbird. After doing so I tried to integrate the old profiles back into the new installation. At first, I chose the largest of the to profile maps and copied it where I found it before the re-installation. I created a new profile using the old profile folder through the User Profile menu. This seemed to work! However, I noticed something. I have two e-mail accounts running in this profile. One IMAP and one POP. I noticed that the POP account was missing about a years worth of old e-mails. As if it stopped saving them at some point. I figured they must be in the other profile folder I found before the re-installation. I tried creating a new profile with this profile but when starting up Thunderbird afterwards I once again got the 'Thunderbird isn't responding' message. So I reverted back to the first profile I made, the one with the missing e-mails. Appart from those e-mails, it seemed to be working well. To get back what was missing, I tried copying the files in the "inbox.sbd" of the back up that wasn't responding into the back up that was responding, thinking that if it messed something up, I could just CTRL + Z my way out of trouble. It seemed that there were three locations in the functioning back up that I could copy the files into, each having the server name of the e-mail account that I was missing e-mails from. I tried copying the files in each of them, each time removing the files through 'undo' before trying the next location. As this seemed unsuccesfull I tried restarting Thunderbird again (having removed the copied files from all locations) which resulted in the following error message:

In a pink screen that I have never seen before. After this I tried removing all profiles and starting again with a fresh copy of the backed up profile folder as I figured I might have accidentally changed something in the profile folder I was using. This however keeps giving the same error message.

Clearly, I messed something up. But I don't know what. Can anybody help? One last thing I noticed that in the 'Mail' folder within the profile folder, there where three folders with the server name before, now there is only one. I guess this is a clue?

All help is welcome!

Hello:

In Thunderbird, a double-click no longer opened a highlighted email in a new tab as the 'Classic' setup used to do.

I ended up in system setting for the mouse/touchpad. The 'double click' slider had NO value set to it. The 'double click' test did not work.

I set 'a' value to the slider. Viola! The double click test works. Thunderbird works as it used to, as it has.

SOMEthing put a null value in the system settings. I had been nowhere around that function setting.

I am running Thunderbird 140.7.1esr (64 bit) running on Ubuntu 22.04.

I need to filter some emails, and need to filter by the "reply to" email.

Reading elsewhere, I followed the instructions, and created a new custom tag to filter (and checked in the advanced part of the settings, and saw that under the mailnews.xxxx there was the "Reply-To" header set up.

I then set up a filter to use this new tag (sorry if my terminology is incorrect), and ran it on a mailbox, where I know there are emails with the Reply To email address is present, and not one of the emails was affected by the filter.

What am I doing wrong?

Many thanks for your help.

I was using Thunderbird 153.4.0esr 64-bit and my send feature on GMail stopped working. It just spun and spun with no connection.

So, I removed the GMail account from my accounts list and then tried re-adding it, but only received the following error (see image attached). This implies what? I have an account at GMail already? I have a remnant of the previous working account in my configuration? It was working fine until today.

I'm using the automatically derived ports (993 inbound and 465 outbound). That error message appears immediately after having clicked the "Continue" button.
