Hi, I've received the email below from Microsoft today.

I have 15 email accounts linked to Thunderbird mail and use up to 5 of them daily. Sometimes 'instant' communications on one or more of my accounts can be important.

Will Thunderbird mail still function in the same way from 16th September?

I apologise if this question has been answered somewhere else. I searched but could not find it.

"The safety and security of your information is top priority for Microsoft. To help keep your account secure, Microsoft will no longer support the use of third-party email and calendar apps which ask you to sign in with only your Microsoft Account username and password. To keep you safe you will need to use a mail or calendar app which supports Microsoft’s modern authentication methods. If you do not act, your third-party email apps will no longer be able to access your Outlook.com, Hotmail or Live.com email address on September 16th.

What do you need to do?

If you are receiving this email, you are currently using an email or calendar app that uses a less secure authentication method to connect to your Outlook.com email account. You will need to upgrade your third-party mail and calendar app to a version which supports modern authentication methods.

Microsoft provides free versions of Outlook for your PC, Mac, iOS, and Android devices which can be easily downloaded and connect to your email account. Using an updated version of an Outlook application will ensure you are connecting in the most secure way.

How can you set up your Gmail, Apple Mail, or other third-party mail application?

Various non-Microsoft applications will have their own steps for connecting to your Outlook.com email account using modern authentication methods. See our help article - Modern Authentication Methods now needed to continue syncing Outlook Email in non-Microsoft email apps. However, you may need to contact the creators of those applications to provide you with instructions. In many cases, simply removing and re-adding your account with the latest version of that application will configure it to use modern authentication methods."

Not a question, a suggestion. On the help page for using OAuth2 in Thunderbird, there are 2 things not specified. 1. In the SMTP settings, I couldn't select OAuth2 untli I changed the server from something older to, if I remember right, smtp.office365.com. The old entry was more like smtp.outlook.com. Then I had to close and restart Thunderbird. 2. Tbird still couldn't access my Outlook mail account. On Microsoft's security page, I had to create an "app password" and enter that in Thunderbird instead of my previous Outlook password. Either I made an error, or the first app password didn't work and I had to create another app password; that time it succeeded.

With Outlook requiring the new sign-in technology, I deleted an account and attempted to re-establish it in Thunderbird. After naming the account and doing the password, said it "Found the configuration...."

Selected IMAP then clicked DONE. Got the attached message. I tried using Firefox browser which was my default. Then I made Chrome the default.

Same message. "We can't sign you in, Java-script is required"

Need some help as to where to go from here.

Thanks B

I'm down to the last few days before Outlook will not be usable on Thunderbird unless I jump through some hoops.

I've seen posts about deleting the Outlook account, then reinstalling it in Thunderbird and Thunderbird will create the necessary security steps to make it usable again. This seems to be the method that works rather than just going into the settings and changing the necessary security settings.

MY QUESTION IS: I have lots of emails (sent and received from past months and years) that I keep in folders within Thunderbird.

How can I keep those folders/emails in the format I have if it's necessary to delete the account on Thunderbird then reestablish it? My understanding is that deleting it in Thunderbird will also delete all local folders and email saved within that account.

Thanks B

Hi.

I've been at it for an hour now. Found nothing in the help, a few things in Google that no longer work... I've updated my MS password including Hotmail/Outlook.com, so no I need to do that in Thunderbird. I can't find where that's done ? (thunderbird windows latest release)

"account parameters" has something for the SMTP server, but not for the IMAP one.

Thanks for any help.

Hi, Thunderbird 128.3.2esr - Windows 10 I have only recently experienced when receiving some messages to my hotmail account that the message is not showing but does show this code 6D7B02AAE06961988F172618 instead. The 'from' and 'subject' in the message headers are also blank. The mail index list does list the subject, sender and time.

This only appears to have started since I updated to the above version. What is this error code and how can I rectify it. Thanks. Jerry

Hello, I've been using Thunderbird since it first came out may years ago and have been a satisfied user. Sometime in the past year, after one of the Thunderbird updates, Thunderbird became EXTERMELY slow to open. It takes over a minute. I have looked for solutions here for the past year...no luck (I've read through most all of them here, that have to do with slowness of Thunderbird opening, as well as on Reddit). I've tried basic troubleshooting e.g. clearing Thunderbird cache, increasing cache to huge size. I've seen references to the slowness being related to "multiple calendars". I don't use calendars on Thunnderbird and went as far as to delete/disable the default one that was there. Still no improvement. I know its a Thunderbird specific problem since:

a. I don't have this slowness opening any other program on my Mac (opening it or using it) b. I don't have a problem with performance of Thunderbird once it finally opens c. It all started in 2022 immediately after one of the Thunderbird updates.

I am on: Mac Air M1, Ventura 13.2, 16 GB Ram Thunderbird 102.14.0 (64-bit)

I hate to ditch Thunderbird after using it all these years and being a very early user since it came out, but I am at wits end. Any help is appreciated. Thanks for any help in advance!

When asked to re-enter the appropriate password I enter the never ending merry-go-round......I have 6 addresses. Whilst it is possible to access then via their specific accounts held with Microsoft this is time consuming, hence the preference of Thunderbirdb which up until now has been trouble free for approx 15 years. This unnecessary development makes me wonder why I only need a user naame aand password to access via Microsoft. I have tried every method kindly provided by other users to no avail. Can anyone provide the correct server setting for both IMAP and SMTP? As I have said these 'new' authentification/s are in my opinion tantamount to using a sledgehammer to crack a walnut. I hope my explantion makes sense? Surely I cannot be alone?

When I go to the indicated website and look up error 1130, this is what I get: The IP address you’re trying to connect from has an issue with the Domain Name System. For years I have used the extension 'Calendar Tweaks' because it colorizes the entire event in the calendar. This extension is no longer compatible with versions of Thunderbird after 74 so I have stop updation after Version 69. However in resolving problems with authorization I needed to update to the current Version of Thunderbird so my events in the calendar now just show the category color at the edge of the box instead of the entire box. Is there a way in Thunderbird to colorize the entire event box or another extension that does this.
