Firefox grinds to a halt and stops communicating with the internet

After a few minutes Firefox stops downloading pages seem to be in a never-ending loop. Closing it then re-starting gets this error message and it cannot be stopped from process explorer. The only way to get it running is to restart the PC.

Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system.

System is running windows XP Professional 32 Bit SP3
