I'm using Linux Mint 18.2, Cinnamon, and am having trouble getting Thunderbird Mail set up. Initially, it successfully downloaded some 32,000 messages from the ISP server, but now when I click "Get Messages" no new messages are downloaded, even though I can see activity on the modem lights and the progress bar at the bottom of the Inbox window shows activity. I know there are new messages on the server since the completion of the initial download to Thunderbird Mail, but they aren't getting into the Inbox.

I tried creating a new profile and restarting Thunderbird, but still can't get new messages. I've checked server settings and am able to send messages, but I'm not getting new messages that were received on the server since the initial download to Thunderbird.

Chosen solution

After I deleted nearly all of the messages from the inbox of my ISP mail account, Thunderbird starting checking for new messages successfully.

32 thousand messages. Might be you have exceeded our providers daily bandwidth allowance or number of mail downloads. More than 24 hours have elapsed since you posted. have things changed?

Hi Matt--Thank you for responding to my question. I've been away from home (and computer) for a few days and just saw your post.

I don't think ISP bandwidth limitation is the cause of the problem, because all messages on the server were downloaded initially. After the first complete download, I sent a new test message to myself and that's when I discovered that Thunderbird's "Get Messages" function wasn't working. It continues to fail to get new messages, even though clicking "Get Messages" connects to the server and then apparently searches for new messages, but never downloads them.

Thanks again for your consideration of this problem...anything else I could try to get Thunderbird to work as it should?
