This is what happens when I try to open Thunderbird: Enter your password for plugitright@gmail.com@imap.googlemail.com. How do I find this password? I can get into Mozilla Firefox just fine but since June 4th, I can't get into Mozilla Thunderbird. Can you help?

Presumably, it's your account and therefore your password. If you have forgotten it, you need to go to the website of the account provider, Googlemail, and look for what support they offer to rescue it. You may have set up a reminder or secret answer, or they will offer some way to change it to a new password.

I'm not sure if the strange formulation of the address is a problem or not. It looks to me like an internal representation of the account identity, storing both your email address and the relevant server name. I suspect we have a bug in that ideally you'd never be shown this particular configuration. But if it bothers you, or continues to appear to be part of the problem, check the account settings and change anything that looks odd, and maybe go to Tools|Options|Security|Passwords->Saved Passwords and delete all the entries for this account.

What is set as User Name in Account Settings - Server Settings? If it's the entire email address remove the part after the @ sign.

I tried that but it didn't work. This is the message I get every time I try to enter my password, even the way you suggested.

imap.googlemail.com failed.

How can I get logged into Thunderbird? Thank you, diana

There is nothing under saved passwords for Mozilla Thunderbird. Any other suggestions? Thank you, Diana

You don't log into Thunderbird. You log into your email account. Talk to your provider if you forgot your log in info.

Do you still get the 'plugitright@gmail.com@imap.googlemail.com' password prompt?

imap.googlemail.com failed.

Please provide the entire error message.

Yes and it keeps telling me to Enter New Password. When I enter the one that gets me into Firefox, it doesn't accept that password & I didn't change my password.

Yes

Looks like we're running in circles. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1067138#answer-741347

it doesn't accept that password

In your Thunderbird Account Settings, set 'Authentication type' to 'OAuth2' for your Gmail account, for both, incoming and outgoing server.

I couldn't find anything in TBA settings to set the Authentication type. Can you tell me where it is? Thank you, Diana

I would guess that this has less to do with the password and more to do with the email address. plugitright@gmail.com@imap.googlemail.com is not a valid email address so I cannot see any password is going to work.

so can you check the following and report back on what you have and make modifications as necessary,

right click on the account name in the Folder pane and select 'Settings' check these details are correct name at domain = plugitright 'at' gmail.com where the 'at' is substituted for a @ symbol. So you need to type the email address, I've not stated it as it is a public forum.

  • Account name = 'name at domain' email address.
  • Your name = your name
  • Email address = 'name at domain' email address.

click on 'Server Settings' for the mail account

  • server type: = IMAP mail server
  • Server name = imap.googlemail.com
  • User Name = your 'name at domain' email address.

click on OK

Please confirm you have these setting.

I couldn't find anything in TBA settings to set the Authentication type.

From the main menu bar: Tools (Alt-T) - Account Settings - Server Settings - Authentication method Choose 'OAuth2' from the drop-down menu. As said before, do this for both, the incoming and outgoing server.

Tools (Alt-T) - Account Settings - Outgoing Server (SMTP) - Edit - Authentication method

Just wanted to update you that I took my laptop to a Staples and explained my issue. He checked several things and said that I had set up a 2 step authentication with a number to be texted to me on June 7th. From that point on Thunderbird would not allow me in. He told me that Firefox is OK with this but Thunderbird doesn't like it. He removed the 2 step authentication which allowed me to open Thunderbird.. He told me that when I got back to my desktop that when I got that "enter password again" message to put in the one I use and it did allow me to get into Thunderbird. Both computers have up to date e-mails. You may wish to investigate this further to pass on to others. While I am glad it is working, I don't like that I have to give up and extra layer of security if I want to keep Thunderbird. Diana

You might want to learn how gmail features that YOU chose to use work.

https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/185834?hl=en#ASPerror

It is common knowledge here that you need an application specific password for all email clients, including Thunderbird, when you select to use Googles messed up login arrangement. Maybe next time you might want to mention this is an option that you are using to get a quicker answer.

It may be common knowledge to you all but it sure wasn't to me. Sarcasm really isn't the way "support" people are supposed to help people who don't have the "common knowledge" you state we should all know. This is your area. If you called me about the stabilizers I make, I can easily bring my knowledge down to your level without making you feel stupid. To me if you offer support to people who are stuck or don't know how to fix something, you should do the offering of=== Did you install something, change something, etc. I assure you, I won't be bothering you again as I don't need your sarcasm.
