My computer, using Windows 10, crashed, and I did a successful reset of the Dell factory settings. I chose the option for preserving my data. But it is hard to be sure, since as the Dell system partition , C:, is rather small, I had moved my documents on the other partition, drive D:
There are possible complications, for none of which I would rule out stupidity. I somehow corrupted something, probably in my user profile, johnw, with the rresult that variou prograammes ceased to function. So I repeated the factory reset. This coincided with the failure of the Dell keyboard (Better minds than mine may see why we can no longer just unclip and replace a keyboard from the front!) So as numerc codes and the onscreen keyboard are unavailable at that stage, I chose to be user JW.
Everything now worksperfectly, with one exception. I have installed Thunderbird, added my two IMAP Gmail mail accunts, and created a test local folder, which shows up in my new folder, and updates properly when I move a piece of unk mail into it. Maiol from quite a long way back has come h♂me to roost in my Inboxes, Sent Mail and All Mail folders. Nothing I mind losing is on local storage folders created for my new profile.
The problem is that twenty years of messages, some very important, were in my old profiie's local storage folders. What I thought was an adequate backup on drive D: and an external hard drive (I've mentioned stupidity) is a bare profile folder, named with eight random letters and .default.
I've copied it int the Peofiles folder, alongside the good working one, but Thunderbird doesn't recognise it. I confess I don't undersstand going up three steps to the Thunderbird folder. I make that two steps, with an otherwise working sinstallation. But the point is that two or three, for my backup I don't have them. I would be well pleased if anybody can tell me how to get just the mail strage folders back. I can see them in there, two files per folder, one describbed as a m.msf fileand the other just as "file". The sizes look right, to. It's a cruel world if I can't get those back.
I am sArry to complicate this further, but in my Windows 10 settings the options to show hidden files is for some reason greyed outin inoperable. Is it possible the missing twoor three levels above the profile in my johnw user AppData are concealed that way?
