I am aware of this option but no, I was able to disable images from within the settings menu in the stable version, no about:config necessary.

I guess on the stable release, the best workaround is the uBlock Origin extension.

After installing:

menu > Add-ons > uBlock Origin

Cast your gaze down past the current site controls and tap Open the Dashboard

On the "Settings" panel, scroll down to the "Default behavior" section.

Turn on "Block media elements larger than" and set the desired size. Using 0 (zero) will block all images, audio, and video.

I have experimented with this for 90 seconds, so I'm sure there are more nuances, but:

• To retrieve and display an image/video on a page, I just need to tap it (no idea about audio)
• If the image is linked, a second tap activates the link
• To make a site exception, I need to go to menu > Add-ons > uBlock Origin, then tap the relevant icon

Certainly a solution that skews towards the ideal. But it's got some mixed results. On Amazon.com I'll see the products at the top of the page but scrolling below the images are disabled, although they don't enable with a tap. petco.com has some images that display but other images that do enable with a tap. Wikipedia works perfectly with it however.

Maybe I'll have to play with some of the other filter settings of uBlock Origin to get precisely what I'm looking for. This is a nice step in the right direction. Would love it if this "tap to display image" was built into firefox itself.

I can't get used to the mixed results with ublock.

Im typing this from the opera browser right now as it's the only trusted browser on Android right now that has the feature native to it.

I miss firefox! I miss being able to long press a blank image to bring up the image! This sucks! Please bring it back!

Out develoeprs are working on new features and fixing unresolved issues and this may well be something that is added in a future update.

Thanks for the uBlock Origin solution, sadly this is an all or nothing approach, the old feature was selectable related to the connection type.

At home I like to see the images, while commuting I don't need them (or tap them if I want to see one), the connection speed in the underground isn't the best anyway and I have a tighter traffic limit. Normally it worked, but with the new firefox it just takes half of the month to reach the limit. So i'll be very happy when you reintroduce this feature.

I am hating using opera and really want to come back to firefox.

It would be perfect if the image toggle was placed in site permissions so it could be enabled and disabled by website just like Chrome for desktop.
