Hi, I am suddenly getting frequent Firefox crashes after a recent Firefox update. It still crashes in Safe Mode with hardware acceleration disabled. Memory tests fine. All software is up to date.

The last few crash report details are as follows:

Let’s do a full clean re-install;

Note: Firefox comes in three or more folders on all computers. They are;

Maintenance: (Programs Folder) <Windows Only> Firefox itself: (Programs Folder) And two folders in the profile of each user on the computer for each Firefox profile for that user.

If you remove the Firefox folder, the user profiles would not be affected.

Download Firefox For All languages And Systems {web link}

Save the file. Then Close Firefox.

Using your file browser, open the Programs Folder on your computer.

Windows: C:\Program Files C:\Program Files (x86) Note: Check Both Folders

Mac: Open the "Applications" folder. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-download-and-install-firefox-mac

Linux: Check your user manual. If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it. See Install Firefox on Linux; https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/install-firefox-linux

If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the Firefox download page, simply remove the folder Firefox in your home directory. http://www.mozilla.org/firefox#desktop ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Look for, and remove any Mozilla or Firefox program folders. Do not remove the Mozilla Thunderbird folder if there is one.

Do Not remove any profile folders.

After rebooting the computer, run a registry scanner if you have one. Then run the installer. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++ If there is a problem, start your Computer in safe mode and try again.

Hi,

Thanks for the suggestion, but its still crashing I'm sorry to say.

I did a full removal using the Synaptic Package Manager, deleted Firefox folders but keeping the profile, rebooted and re-installed Firefox (again using the Package Manager).

Firefox still crashing. Rebooted Linux into recovery mode and Firefox still crashing.

Update.

After a suggestion from elsewhere I have cleared the cache and since then I have had no more crashes. However, it has only been a few hours but I will report back after another 24 hours by which time it should be more clear as to whether or not this has fixed the problem.

Some of the crashes are about playing media files (libavcodec-ffmpeg.so; pulse-shm), so make sure you have the latest updates for all audio and video related packages (FFmpeg/libavcodec and others like pulse audio).

Because you use the Firefox version from the Ubuntu repositories there are no symbols available and the crash reports only show addresses that do not mean anything.

All software & drivers are as up to date as I can make them. However, I have just reinstalled all ffmpeg and pulseaudio packages following the latest crash.

Unfortunately I am still getting crashes.

Crash report from the Ubuntu repositories Firefox version are of no use because no cross reference to the source code is available.

Please try the Firefox version from the official Mozilla server to see whether this version crashes as well, then at least the reports are clearer.

Okay, cor-el, will do. I am downloading it now but will possibly not be able to do a clean install until the weekend. I'll report back when there is something to report!

Thanks.

Okay, an update.

I have been running the Mozilla server version of Firefox 69.0 for two days and no crashes.

There was an 'interesting' problem with profiles in that the Mozilla Firefox would not run using the profile from the Mint Firefox. When I tried to start Mozilla Firefox with the Mint Firefox profile it came up with an error message saying I was trying to start an old version of Firefox and listed some dire consequences and would not start. After messing around with the Profile Manager and about:profiles for quite a while, the only way I could get a reasonable working profile on the Mozilla Firefox was to use Firefox Sync and sync up to the Firefox profile on my Win 10 machine (runs Firefox 69.0 with no problems). The Mint Firefox profile originated from that same Win 10 machine about a year ago by the straight-forward copy & paste of the profile folder, but the two were no longer 'in sync'.

So, it seems that the Mozilla Firefox is happy and if I switch back to the Linux Mint Firefox it crashes after just a few hours.

After getting no crashes on Mozilla Firefox I have gone back to the Liux Mint Firefox and created a new profile, sync'd it to my Win 10 machine and have been giving it some use. Firefox is no longer crashing completely, but I do get the occasional Tab crashing.

Spoke too soon - just had a complete FF crash on the Mint FF.

Do you have some crash reports from the official Firefox version from the Mozilla server to see whether those reports contain useful data ?

more options

None! I have not had any crashes at all when using the offical FF 69.0 from the Mozilla server. I only get crashes when using the Linux Mint version of FF 69.0. So, I would guess its not a Mozilla problem?
